Updated his mock draft today and will have 2nd round tomorrow. Has us selecting Fletcher Cox.

Less than a year ago the Panthers invested two premium draft picks on Terrell McClain and Sione Fua and they were supposed to solve Carolina’s issues at defensive tackle. Unfortunately the Panthers finished near the bottom of the league in rushing defense again last season and the duo of McClain / Fua combined for just a single sack. Not exactly the return they were expecting on that significant investment. It’s too early to give up on those two youngsters, but it’s also clear that Carolina needs to add another disruptive presence to the middle of their defensive line. Every year there is a player who is very highly thought of in league and scouting circles that the media and draftniks underrate and this time around it’s Mississippi St. DT Fletcher Cox. A terrific athlete with all the physical tools that you look for, Cox is extremely versatile and could project to either defensive tackle or defensive end at the next level depending on the scheme. Cox would be a three-technique in Carolina and would give the team a legitimate pass rush threat on the interior. L.S.U. DT Michael Brockers and Memphis DT Dontari Poe will likely receive consideration as well. The Panthers could also use upgrades at cornerback and wide receiver but L.S.U. CB Morris Claiborne and Oklahoma St. WR Justin Blackmon will almost certainly be long gone by this point and the next best players at those positions would be reaches in the Top 10. As a real darkhorse keep an eye on Boston College LB Luke Kuechly since Thomas Davis’ future is still very much up in the air while Dan Connor is a free agent.

Wouldn't be upset with this pick at all.

I have been a fan of this guy for awhile. It is hard to figure out why he isn't more highly regarded by the "experts" (said with tongue firmly in cheek).

Maybe he just doesn't have a good agent/publicist.

In any case, I would love to have a good pass-rushing addition to the line, be it at DE or DT. Cox has played both with success. And while I think Brockers and maybe even Poe may be better than they are now given time to develop, right now Cox seems to be the best of the 3 at that particular skill.

    • I largely detached from the NBA altogether the last few months. I had no idea the Pistons somehow stumbled into the playoffs. Seems like even the poverty franchises are a few tiers above us. Unreal.
    • I think it's a possibility of them moving to #3 with the Giants for Carter because.. The Giants can't take Sanders at 3, it's too high (and too much pressure). Get a 3rd and 4th round and maybe a next year 2nd (not too steep) and they save face and get their man and we get ours. If the price is too much, Morgan won't do it.  It's the same for us. We wouldn't mind moving back a couple of spaces but teams won't give up too much. If our top 3 picks are gone at 8, people might not give us a ton to move, but we may get something and still get a good player at 12-15 or so.  I don't think teams will over pay to move up this year, so the next best thing is get what you can and still get a decent pick.
    • We can't right this ship in a single offseason anyway. Dan Morgan needs to focus on the basics. If he gets hung up on trying to get value out of this pick or that pick and trying to acquire extra assets like Scott Fitterer used to always thinking he was the smartest guy in the building then Dan is in all likelihood in for another rude awakening. And as usual the fanbase will be the ones picking up the pieces.
