Cam Newton and Luke's pressers 4/22/2014

Notes from watching Cam:

- Loved the statement that he's not going to be "selfish enough to be mad" about the receivers getting contracts elsewhere.  That's an extremely mature statement (and one that DeAngelo Williams should probably take note of).

- Good job shooting down "speculation and rumors" about Steve Smith.  Yes, it was a deflection and a non-answer, but you have to be able to do that when you're dealing with the press, and he did it well.

- Pretty clear statement that you will never hear him argue with statements from anyone in the organization.  "Whatever Coach Rivera says, Dave Gettleman says, Mr. Richardson says, etc...I'm behind it 110%."

- Four words, spoken just after five minutes in: "I'm the team leader".  Good to hear.

- Doesn't care about his stats.  His job is to execute.

- "Plenty of time" to develop chemistry with receivers.  Points out they're free to meet on their own.

- Hoping for an offensive player in the draft but says it's more important to get 'the right guy'.

- Has learned that talent isn't enough.  Hard work, humility and a team-focused attitude are necessary elements to success in the NFL.

- The much quoted "I have to take more ownership in this offense" (around the 7 to 8 minute mark) is a big deal.  He says he is excited to take on the challenge and be "a leader of men" and "like never before" to do the "proper and necessary" things to "reach out to players".

- Cam makes very clear it is a team game, not a one man show.  He specifically names Ryan Kalil, Thomas Davis, Charles Johnson, Greg Hardy and "Luuuuke" Kuechly as players he needs more than ever now.

- Said specifically "we" have never had back to back winning seasons.  Saying it this way Cam, who has only been a Panther for a few years, identifies himself with all of Panther history.  That's the kind of full buy in that you want a team leader to have.

- Talked about all the new receivers as guys who want to win.  Said you can tell within a few minutes of meeting someone whether you're gonna have a good relationship or not and feels positive about all of these guys.

- The injury has given him the chance to work more than usual on the mental aspects of the game, and even though he's normally a very physically active person, he welcomes the opportunity because he's always looking for ways to get better.

- Not interested in talking about his contract...at all.

Observations:

As others have speculated, you do get a little bit of a sense of relief with regard to the Steve Smith thing.  It's certainly not blatant and has probably been overstated in the media, but I do think it's there.

The difference in his demeanor when he talks about the new receivers (you could say "his guys" vs talking about Smith is visible.  That's not to say he hated or disliked Smitty in any way, but it's no stretch to think Smitty wasn't always an easy guy to work with, and now that's gone.

One other thing I notice: As you've seen with team officials, Cam seems a tad dismissive of questions asked by Joe Person.  Granted, players and reporters aren't necessarily meant to have "warm fuzzy' relationships, but you can get a sense that some are more well-liked than others.

Biggest takeaway of anything: Cam doesn't sound like a college kid anymore.  He took the podium sounding like a ten year NFL veteran and completely owned it.  He even did a good job answering some questions that he clearly found a little irritating without coming off sounding like it.  That's maturity,

One of the things you find enjoyable as you get older (like me) is watching kids grow up.  Watching this presser made me feel like that's what I was seeing.

Notes from Luke:

- Says he "notices who's not there", particularly captain Munnerlyn who was 'always talking".

- The mention of the front seven brings a cheese-eating, slightly evil smile to his face.

- Says the guys on defense don't care about stats.  they just wanna do their job.

- Asked about Greg hardy, smiled and said "Greg's Greg and he's a good guy to have around."

- Has met some of the new guys, is introducing himself as he meets them and has positive feelings about them.

- Working to get better on pass rush and coverage.  Plans to work really hard this offseason.  Getting help from Thomas Davis and LB Coach Al Holcomb.

- Talked about the secondary as "pieced together" but with "good pieces".

- Says Thomas Davis is more the vocal leader while he prefers to be a 'by example' guy who speaks to individuals rather than in front of everyone at once.

- Refers to Newton as "same old Cam"; joking, excited, competitive and ready to go.

- Mentions, as tweeted by several, that his individual award trophies are somewhere in a box.  It's not a big deal to him.

- Demonstrated that he's conscious of the moves that have been made by divisional opponents.

- Also shows that he's knowledgeable about the guys that have been brought in.  It's clear he's spent some time learning whatever there is out there to know about his new teammates.  Mentions Roman Harper as being a good guy that he's getting to know.

- Says Gettleman has done a good job assembling the team so far.

- Knows that success last year doesn't guarantee anything this season.

- Says the hard part about losing guys is that "you're friends with all these guys" but he realizes that it's a business and, like Cam, says "good for them" that they've achieved what they have.

Observations:

Luke just doesn't come off as a guy who especially enjoys being in front of reporters.  It seems like something he tolerates because it's part of what he does.  By contrast, Cam seems perfectly at home answering questions, but you get the sense that Luke would rather be doing something else.

(that's not a bad thing on either side, mind you, just an observation)

One big takeaway from this: Late in the video, Luke talks about how he thinks that getting to know guys personally is actually more important than 'the football stuff'.  Kuechly believes that if you have chemistry with guys off the field that the on-field chemistry will show up as well.  o you can tell a good locker room is pretty important to him.

That might sound like an odd idea coming from a guy who eats, sleeps and breathes football the way Kuechly does, but there's a lot of validity to it when you think about it.  Who among us doesn't have a better working relationship with co-workers that we like?

Good presser. And like everyone else, I'm excited to see what this kid does in the coming season.  If he keeps improving, the sky is the limit.

Great recap! I wasn't able to see the video yet so thanks for breaking down the key points of his presser.

Both are definitely worth watching even if you've read the notes here already.  You'll gain insights of your own that I would have missed.
