Cam Newton: “I have to take more ownership of this offense and I will."

For right now, I'd settle for a quality contributor at the position, and there is plenty of talent in this years draft for us to find one.

I mentioned him a few posts later.

my bad.  didn't see that post.

crutch can refer to something that someone relies on that they don't really need.  In that way, yeah, it can be a hinderance.  We're going to find out if Cam is good enough make everyone else better a la P. Manning or Brady.  If he does, we're going to look back at smitty as a hinderance.

Manning and Brady have about 30 years combined in the NFL, and Peyton isn't exactly playing with some scrubs out there. Cam is entering his fourth season, a contract year, and had his entire WR corps gutted. When was this the last time a similar scenario occurred?

I'm fine with moving on from Steve, but I won't bury my head in the sand too. Cam has had two "go to" reliable receiving options through his career, Steve, and Greg. I think labeling either of those guys a "crutch" is a stretch considering the other options we've given Cam since 2011.

Tis true.

If you look at the stable of receivers the Saints have been using over the past few years, they're really not that great. Jimmy Graham is great, but the wide receivers (Marques Colston included) don't rise above "good" to me. Heck, look back at their Super Bowl depth chart. Lance Moore, Devery Henderson, Robert Meachem...none of those guys ever struck me as being special.

They've been able to sustain a great passing attack resting primarily on two things: An accurate quarterback and an offensive line that gives him time to find the open guy.

Get Newton a line that gives him time like that, and I think we can wait a year to go after a 'gamebreaker'.

The best WR crop in decades won't be there next year. Why wait when this draft is giving you ample opportunity

to get playmakers. You're taking a major risk hoping next year draft is like this one.

I say take advantage of what the draft is giving us.

The OL has been gradually becoming a problem for the past few seasons, it's not a secret. We also knew that Gross was very likely heading into his final season last year. Our drafting of contributors to the offensive side of the ball since 2011 has been very inadequate to put it nicely.

As for the WR's, the main goal should be to improve on the position first and foremost, not just settle for "replacing" those previous players. We do not have a clear #1 receiver, and I don't care what generic statements Gettleman or Rivera give before the draft, they want one.

We truly don't have a clear numbers 2. To be honest.

I'm still kinda surprised some of you think the reason we released Smith was due to leadership. That is more media BS in my opinion and if I am wrong can someone link a video that DG said I am releasing Smith because he is a distraction. It was more for long term salary cap not this year but in 2015 and 2016 when the money is used to pay cam and luke.

I am very happy that cam doesn't seem to be concerned with money at all. He is fine with the 5th year option and it doesn't seem like money is his number 1 priority.
