Under DG Giants never drafted OL in 1st round

from ESPN:

"Gettleman admits he's a novice when it comes to evaluating college personnel and his knowledge of running a draft. With the Giants, all of his work came on the pro personnel side, which included analyzing NFL free agents. Occasionally he'd get asked advice on a college player, but those instances were few and far between.

"As a pro guy basically I was in the war room on draft handling the trade phone," Gettleman said of his time with the Giants. "That was basically it." But in the end he doesn't think evaluating NFL talent is much different than assessing college talent.

"I'd like to think in my 28 years in the league I have a pretty good idea of who can play," Gettleman said.

Still, he'll lean upon (his staff) for added input.

"The best thing I can do is listen," Gettleman said.

"What the draft is all about, it's not about who's right it's about getting the guy right. He's not my guy he's our guy. And that's the biggest thing I do"

No credit on who wrote that article other than AP (Reed maybe) but it's definitely got some issues.

Gettleman didn't say he was a novice at scouting college players.  He said he was a novice at running a draft.  He'd been a college scout for eleven years before joining the Giants, so that's hardly a novice.

Also of note, early in the article it says we had a need at defensive end.  Hardy and Johnson were already in place.

I think I understand what the OP is saying. I do remember an article or two about Gettlemen saying that you don't necessarily have to take an Olinemen high, that you can "coach them up".

He also worked under Ernie Acorsi for a lot of years and I believe he only drafted an Olinemen in the first round once.

All that being said, if this is Gettlemen's philosophy, I'm sure it's not written in stone. He is the man that said "big men allow you to compete" so I'm pretty sure if an Olineman is BPA, Gettlemen will ****** him up.
