couple other writers on Moncrief:

-"much development is still needed before he's capable of being a steady contributor in the NFL..misses a lot of catchable passes.... usually lets the ball come into his chest rather than catching away from his body. ... needs to focus on developing the fundamentals of running routes and putting himself in position"

-"I am worried about Donte Moncrief’s hand size (9.125 inches) and whether that might be a problem for him in the NFL.... his hands are the same size as both Greg Little and Darrius Heyward-Bey, who are notorious for being among the hardest working receivers when it comes to the JUGS machine and trying to correct their drop issues. They’ve both been unable to correct their problems.

...

pass-catching can be impacted by whether or not a player can catch the ball cleanly with his hands.

Being able to do that just makes their catch radius a lot bigger than if they have to body catch the ball. For instance, Stephen Hill only body catches the ball. Despite his 215 pound frame, he’s 0 for 12 in converting red zone targets into touchdowns."

49ers blogger:

"I've seen nine games, a few times each, and while I admit that Moncrief is an athletic guy, I am not sure I'm as high on him as others. He really has a lot to work on...I'm just gonna come right out and say it...Moncrief does not have good hands. Some will argue and give a myriad of excuses as to why he drops passes, but there are plenty of well-placed footballs that he simply drops of his own volition. He loves to cradle the ball into his gut, often leaving his feet for passes unnecessarily. If he has to go up and get it with his hands, there's a decent chance it's going to hit the ground.

...

All-in-all I wouldn't be in favor of investing a first or even second round pick on Moncrief. The big plays are few and far between and it seems he has a long way to go - and who knows if he even can improve upon his hands"

If his hands are not that great, that's a huge concern for me, it reminds me of Donald.

Get Matthews.

Moncrief's body-catching and catching radius are the biggest and perhaps the only flaws in his game. I'm not worried about his route-running since that can be worked on. His hands are far from fantastic (which is why he body catches) but once he has the ball in his hands he can virtually burn 90% of DBs. Donte is the type of WR that takes the top off a defense and fights for extra yardage with his big frame.

I don't see Moncrief as a good Slot Receiver since he'll be asked to make tough catches (a problem that could intensify with us since Cam throws lasers) but he could make a very, very good third option upon entering the league. Down the road, who knows? Donte could prove to be a solid number two.

I saw that someone compared him to former Saints WR Devery Henderson (a 2nd R pick), who struggled with drops throughout his career but had outstanding straight-line speed and made the big play occasionally.

regarding Moncrief's ability to burn NFL DBs after the catch, at least 5 of the scouting reports i read think he isn't very good at that when it comes to his elusiveness:

-"Moncrief doesn’t do much after the catch. His straight-line speed is phenomenal, but the former Rebel struggles with lateral quickness and agility"

-"While his forty- yard dash puts him among the top with straight-line speed , his hips are a tad stiff as shown in his 3 Cone ."

-"Not the most fluid athlete; stiff hipped... struggles to create seperation downfield"

-"Tried to play like a pure speed receiver in college but he doesn't have the elite separation ability to play that same role in the NFL and will need to develop his ability to win with his size.... Athletic enough to make one move after the catch but lacks the agility to put together multiple moves to weave his way through traffic.... At Ole Miss, Moncrief attempted to play the role of a speed receiver, but he simply lacks the speed or agility to play with that style in the NFL. To excel at the next level, Moncrief needs to embrace his size and focus on developing the fundamentals of running routes as a possession receiver and putting himself in position to make contested catches."

-"Not a catch-and-run receiver, doesn't display the ability to make DBs miss... Moncrief doesn't excel in short catch-and-run situations. He has great speed out in space, but doesn't have the wiggle to get himself free after the catch."

I'm sorry I do not agree with some of those things those guys are saying. Il do a write up tomorrow about some things that are not true.

He does body catch a lot, but so did Cordarrelle Patterson. He does not have the wiggle that CP has, but he is just as explosive and a threat with his Yac ability.

I don't get how you get that, out of that statement. All that statement means I think he's really talented, there'a a chance someone believe so as much as I do. I hope they dont and he falls to us

I have read that "statement" about damn near every WR discussed, to the point I'm almost convinced most of you think Rd 1 and 2 will be nothing but WR and OTs drafted. What's really gonna be messed up is when Lewan and Cooks is still on the board at 28 and we select a DE or LB or S

Cosell prides himself at being a tape guy and breaking down players and admits his mocks and round grades are just speculation.

I agree, but his evaluations are pretty accurate a lot of times. If he thinks Moncrief is a quality player there's probably several teams that do as well. If I had to bet right now Moncrief isn't on the board when we pick at 60.

Just depends on how there boards work. You really cant predict the draft I mean who would have ever thought Star would drop to us but he did. Also no one saw us taking Luke the year before that and we did so really we as fans have no idea how it works. For example I remeber watching this show with a former scout and him telling how AZ idea was to draft someone with STAR impact alone and talent didnt matter that much. I know that's a extreme case but it does happen.
