Donte Moncrief has visited and worked out with Panthers

Big frame and longer arms provide him a wide catching radius. However, has smaller hands and fights the ball at times. A lot of double catches viewed on tape.  Has a bad habit of allowing the ball into his body especially with underneath routes. At his best catching the ball above his shoulders. Underwhelming finisher in contested jump ball situations considering measureables and leaping ability (39 ½ VJ). Doesn't always time jumps well and has some tightness adjusting to the ball.

Scout's inc on moncreif and my biggest problem with him.

Chargers blogger:

"Focus drops are a big issue... This might turn off any Charger fan from Moncrief. The drops Moncrief has are maddening.... I've seen him drop multiple passes in games that were just killer to his team.... During the Missouri game I counted 3(maybe 4) drops, it was to the point where if Moncrief got hit, he was going to drop it.

...

After a good combine (like Moncrief had) receivers this big and fast don't fall too far. But if he's there on Day 3 for San Diego, it would be a smart pick."

Right, because 'stats' are everything. Go watch some clips of him you dimwit. Gee, I wonder why Bo completed 65% of his passes. It couldn't be that he threw 5-10 yard passes all season long. Naw, that can't be it. ANY crappy QB at the college level can manage throw for 3300 yards and possess an impressive completion rate.

lol. Personal attacks. You're such a big man.

Internet tough guy. Watch out.

If there was only some trophy given out to the best college football player in Mississippi. Oh. There is? And Bo Wallace has won it? And was the finalist the next year? Well damn... I guess any college QB can do that.

The Golden Calf of Bristol won the Heisman... point?

He was also the best player in college football when he did it. Doesn't mean his game translated to the nfl. I don't understand what you're arguing here?

Agreed. While I like Moncrief's upside, I worry about his ability in terms of catching the ball.

You don't want that kind of risk in rd 2 of such a deep draft.

agreed.

"In Moncrief’s case, the flaws almost all involve his hands or, more specifically, the lack of his hands. Moncrief is what we, and a lot of other evaluators would call a body-catcher. He has a disposition to use his frame when catching the ball...It causes a shrinking of the effective catch radius and in some ways will limit where the quarterback is comfortable throwing the ball. ....his upside is at least equal to the risk that he fails to develop. And, continued development is crucial for this player.

Receivers who consistently body-catch passes are giving multiple advantages to the defender. It makes the pass easier to defend and deflect from behind and it predictably lowers the target area for the quarterback--taking away a good deal of Moncrief’s size advantage in the process. ... Moncrief’s predisposition to use his body to catch the ball is evident and problematic. ... Step one for Moncrief is to build confidence in his hands and to use them more frequently. Then you hope for increased comfort and overall improvement. In the end, I think this is what will define Moncrief’s career. ... My guess is that he gets taken in round three."

Steelers blogger:

"Drops far too many passes...Body catcher... Only caught 52.6% of targets in 2013 (59 of 112)... Of the 27 receivers I looked at, which included the top receivers, Moncrief’s 52% finished only ahead of Brandon Coleman .... man, is Moncrief inconsistent. And the issue really centers around his hands. Just so many drops. At least six drops in the four games I watched. Part of it is him being a body catcher and not getting his arms extended away from his body. Plays with a much smaller catch radius than he should. ... in the four games I watched, I don’t recall him ever winning a jump ball. Concerning for a guy with that height and vertical."

For every one of those guys, you can find someone saying 3rd-4th. The fact of the matter is only 59 players can go before 60. Everyone saying "we gotta get him before someone else does!" Doesn't realize that there are other positions than wr that will go in the draft.

out of that 59 a fair number will be WR given this a very good class. plus the need for position is rather large, a good 5-8 teams could take a WR before the panthers do if they choose to wait until 60.

You're citing stats without watching him play. My point is any mediocre QB can put up eye-popping stats. Who knows? Maybe Wallace will improve next season but he was very inconsistent and streaky when he needed to make anything beyond 15 yards.

Look at the leading receiver from last year (not Moncrief) and observe where he made all those catches.

I'm in total agreement with you. I think the issue here, however, is the fact that Moncrief is cited to be way better than advertised because he had the waterboy playing QB for him, and that just isn't true. Bo Wallace might not be Mariota level of good, but he is capable of doing something. Ole Miss also runs a spread offense, so you would expect a WR to put up way more numbers than you would normally see, but 800 yards isn't a lot.

I think Moncrief is a 3rd rounder. That's not a knock on him. He has flaws. There are better receivers than him. But, I think he is better than some of the other guys that we've checked out.
