The last five Panther drafts (Where are they now?)

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

There was a time when it was argued that the number of draft picks the Panthers had kept on roster (something like 60-70% of the roster was our own draft picks, more than most teams in the league) was a sign that Marty Hurney was a good General Manager.

That argument is really only valid though if the team that's made up of those picks is a consistent winner.

If you're not winning with those players, what it really shows is that you're too stubborn to admit when you screwed up (and fix it).

I remember that. Any team can put all their draft picks on the roster and boast about it. Doesn't mean they're good unless they prove otherwise. Our picks almost never proved they were good.

I also posted something like this thread when Hurney was still our GM. Wasn't as unanimously accepted as it is now lol.

Compare to this from Seattle:

2010:

1st Round: OT Russell Okung - Starting O-line

1st Round:S Earl Thomas - Probably top safety in NFL

2nd Round: WR Golden Tate - Free Agent - Signed away from Seattle

4th Round:CB Walter Thurmond - Starting DB

5th Round: S Kim Chancellor - Starting SS

6th Round: TE Anthony McCoy  - No Clue?

2011:

1st Round: OG  James Carpenter - Starting O-line

4th Round: OLB KJ Wright - Starting LB

5th Round: CB Richard Sherman - Top 3 CB in NFL

6th Round: CB Byron Maxwell - Starting Nickel

7th Round: OLB Malcolm Smith - Starting LB, Super Bowl MVP

2012:

1st Round - DE Bruce Irvin - Starting DE

2nd Round - MLB Bobby Wager - Starting MLB

3rd Round - QB Russell Wilson - Starting QB

4th Round -  RB Robert Turbin - 3rd down RB

4th Round - LB Korey Toomer - No Clue

6th Round - CB Jeremy Lane - Depth DB

7th Round - DE J.R. Sweezy - Depth DL

Those 3 drafts are what turned Seattle into what they are today.  Those are 3 incredible drafts.  Just sad when you them to ours.

i still remember 2011/2012 all the experts BLASTed the seafags after the draft, most times called it the worst overall draft funny thing..... i agree with most of it, it goes to show if the drafted player fixs the system thats what counts. irvin is starting to smell of bust tho......

Examining several years of draft results was actually what changed my mind about Hurney.

I had tried to defend him based on the results we got from 03 to 05.  But time negated those early successes.  the more I've looked at it since, I think a lot of the early results were due to the fantastic final draft Seifert had followed by the awful season that gave us one of the highest picks in the draft (would have been the highest if not for the creation of the Texans).  We didn't really have great success again until 2008, which came after the next decent draft Hurney had in 07.

Bottom Line: Hurney just wasn't going to be a guy that could give us sustained success.

Biggest difference I see is that we actually have a person who led the personnel scouting department calling the shots here... I think he could be as good as Ozzie Newsome. .

They hired their current GM (John Schneider) in 2010.

That was one hell of a good hire.

I think Hurney shot from the hip too much but his worst trait was falling in love with a player and would trade up to get them. I see very few players or situations in the 1st couple of rounds where trading more than a spot or two makes sense.

That's a lot to ask.

I'd absolutely hope for that but it's a tall order.

cmon man, Pickles is a "Free Agent"? How bout officially "retired" or "out of football"

I thought about it

I classified guys as 'out of football' if they weren't on anyone's roster for at least a year.  Technically Jimmy was with us, though on IR.

I agree he probably is 'out of football' now, but officially...
