Kony Ealy or Dee Ford

I think so, too. I believe he also benefited from being on a great Auburn team

You need to check again on how "great" Auburn's defense as a whole was last year.

Here's a hint: outside of very, very strong line play (led by Ford), the defense was pretty bad.

The reason he's so damn good is because he's smart and uses that intelligence on top of his speed in his rushes.  He doesn't just depend on brute strength or speed.  He knows the "moves" that will get him free from the offensive lineman. He's a student of the game.

Dee Ford is a *better*, stronger, and faster player than Corey Lemonier from Auburn and Lemonier was picked by SF last year in the 2nd round.  Lemonier played very strong last year replacing Aldon Smith when he was suspended and is Aldon Smith's likely replacement yet again this year.  And, to repeat, Ford is BETTER than him.

I appreciate that candor.

I don't know why, but I'm seeing Ford as a Beason-like LB in the NFL.  Am I off base?

I don't think OLB in a 4-3 is a natural fit for Ford either.  And he's definitely not a MLB.

Gus Bradley, head coach of the Jaguars, at the Senior Bowl said Ford would be perfect for the 'LEO' position that the Jaguars use which is a hybrid LB/DE.

And, as I pointed out in a post above, last year an Auburn DE of Ford's size (Corey Lemonier) was drafted by SF to play OLB for them and had pretty good success in replacing Aldon Smith while he was suspended and is likely to replace him again this year.  Ford is a better player all-around than Lemonier.

In other words, Ford holds a lot of value for teams that run the 3-4 and very little for those that run a 4-3.

You've admitted your bias already, why would I even listen to this?

Gettleman has made it crystal clear we're not drafting based on immediate needs. We're drafting best available.

But to be honest, virtually every GM says this. No GM is going to come out and say, "Look, we know he wasn't the best player available, but we reached on a position of need." Every GM is going to try to sell people on the idea that the guy he picked was the BPA.

Right, who's going to say "hey we reached but we had to."  Common sense says that when you get to 2 or 3 players that are closely rated team needs become a part of the tiebreaker. He also said that he wants guys that can come in and impact immediately. It would be hard for a 1st rd DE pick to impact immediately when they're behind 2 probowlers (Hardy,CJ) whereas an OT, WR, or even DB could very well walk in and be the best at their position day 1.

After the pick, absolutely. But, Rivera has said already that we're going to go after receivers, so it's no uncommon to hear NFL heads not-lie to the media. I know it's rare, but I think that our front office and coaching staff have been very honest and frank with their approach to everything.

Besides, if we were just doing due diligence, why only workout Ealy and Crichton instead of Ford?

Maybe you should listen to the NFL analysts who have said the same thing I said and predict that he will be a first rounder in the area of pick 20-28?

How's that?

I appreciated your responses especially since you are an Auburn fan and then explained why you would pick Ealy over Ford for the Panthers.

I know we all want a WR(including myself) in the 1st but a DE is a real possibility.
