Before someone attacks NannerPuss, here is the text:

Getting to know …

J.J. Jansen, long snapper

Background: Undrafted in 2008, was traded by Green Bay to Panthers in April for 2011 conditional draft choice.

What you need to know: Competing with Nick Sundberg for long-snapping job vacated when Panthers elected not to re-sign Jason Kyle … Attended Notre Dame, where he was the Irish's long-snapper for 32 games … Didn't play for the Packers last season after he injured his knee in final exhibition … Was an excellent baseball player in high school (Phoenix Brophy Prep), hitting .353 his senior season.

Observations

Rookie Duke Robinson is a big guy (6-foot-5, 310 pounds), as big as offensive line teammateJeff Otah. That's how the Panthers like their offensive linemen these days (backup lineman Geoff Schwartz is 6-6, 331). Robinson is really athletic and moves well.

Attendance at Monday morning's practice session was pretty low. There didn't appear to be more than a few hundred fans on the hillside overlooking the field. There were at least that many lined up for autographs on the sidewalk leading to the gym after practice, though. Attendance seemed to pick up Monday night.

Different modes of transportation: Running back DeAngelo Alexander and receiver/returner Ryne Robinson are getting around the Wofford campus on motor scooters. Safety Chris Harris is using a Segway personal transporter, one of those motorized unicycles.

By the numbers

0 Times Panthers have followed a playoff-win season with another.

20 Career interceptions by cornerback Chris Gamble, second in team history (Eric Davis has 25)

136 Tackles by linebacker Thomas Davis last season, a career high.

Quoting

“Just a sprain. Relax!” Linebacker Jon Beason on his Twitter account, referring to his minor hamstring injury Monday morning.

“We all told him to knock it off.” Offensive tackle Jordan Gross on how teammates reacted when quarterback Jake Delhomme apologized after his six-turnover game in a playoff loss last season against Arizona.

“I was like a blind dog in a meat house.” Defensive end Casper Brinkley on last season, his first in the NFL (he spent it on the Panthers' practice squad).

“It's almost like we hit the ‘pause' button, then hit ‘play' again and here we are back in Spartanburg.” Kicker John Kasay, the last original Panther who's at his 15{+t}{+h} training camp.

Quick hits

Rookie defensive end Everette Brown got some quick advice from Pro Bowler Julius Peppers. “The first thing he said was ‘You're very explosive' and I don't have to deal with the offensive linemen as much as I was trying to, because I could use my speed to get by them. I was very appreciative of it.”

Coach John Fox was pleased with how training camp's first practice went. “You always look a little sluggish that first day in pads,” he said. “But it was very good for a first day.”

Is 900 a large # for a Cats TC practice? Not sure since I went on days that didn't seem to be that popular, especially the second one I went to. Maybe 150-200 peeps there that day.

My mom told me that the Steelers had 10 K their their first day. Yowsah!

Yeah, its kindof an average number for a first day of camp.

if it was in charlotte, it would triple easily.

Smart thing as far as money goes would be to move it. 3 times as much vending and merchandise.

I've been thinking about this lately, so humor me... Is the reason we DON'T have TC in Charlotte is to get the players away from home/family/comfort/etc., and get into the mindset for the season? Other than that, why not take it closer to Charlotte?

Richardson attended Wofford. I also think it's his way of giving South carolina a piece of the Panthers.

Big Cat hearts Spartanburg, thats the only reason.
