Number One Receiver vs Two Tight End Sets

Charlotte Observer: Pressure is on Olsen, Williams

It's pretty much universally accepted that the Panthers will use at least one high draft pick on a wide receiver.  Some have suggested that this is where the Panthers might "double dip" as they did at defensive tackle last season.

But what if the team believes one highly picked receiver is enough given the dual threats they now believe they have at TE?

Or suppose for a moment that one of the top three picks is actually not a wide receiver, but a top pass catching tight end instead?

Could this be part of the theory behind why the team downplays the need for a 'number one' type receiver?

Is it possible that after a high early pick on a receiver or a tight end, the team will focus on other positions like O-Line and secondary?

So the big question then: Do you believe that going back to having dual passing threats at TE with Olsen and Ed Dickson /B Williams / Draft Pick will allow Newton to return to his earlier form as a more prolific passer?

Do you believe it enough that you think waiting till the later rounds for a receiver (in a deep receiver draft) is acceptable?

I was revisiting an interview with JJones with the Charlotte Observer and my interpretation is he feels WR's are tough to coach up to make an immediate impact....it almost sounds like he is looking for a more NFL ready receiver over top athletic ability .I get the impression he will draft a Wr in mid to late rounds.I have provided the link below .

We need a #1 threat like every team should. Two TE sets does not replace elite WR play. Else teams would be stacking up the TEs. We need players that command double and keep teams from putting 9 in the box to stop our running game. When we were successful with the 2 TE set we hand a younger Smith who commanded double team. Don't get it twisted.

I would get it twisted...  2TEs force LBs and S to cover the middle which is an obvious mismatch right out the gate.  This helps give 1 on 1 coverage on the outside.

I'm sure we'll get a nice draft prospect even if he isn't a legit #1 Andre Johnson type..  but 2 TE set creates mismatches and should be a focal point in the offense..

I'm not still sure why people can't see it's apparent benefits...

So, Jordan Matthews?

1 on 1 coverage is off no use if you have no WR to explore it every single down. One good thing about the 2 TE set is better protection.

1 on 1 coverage requires good route running..  of which I think we have handled, even if they aren't spectacular playmakers..
