Number One Receiver vs Two Tight End Sets

I think the Panthers will have no problem taking the BPA, especially if he's a WR, pass catching TE or OL (with a focus on WR and TE).

It appears like the Panthers want to have a receiving corps that can make the tough yards, and catch balls in the endzone. Having a speedy, home run receiver would be a bonus. And they'll certainly take it, if they can get it come draft time (buttressing their physical pass catchers).

However, I think it's clear the Panthers want tall, physical receivers (including TE's) who can move the chains and catch TD's. This is exactly what the Panthers didn't have last year, with the exception of Olsen, who despite his production, was poor in YAC yards.

Two tight ends would make more sense if the draft goes WR early and neglects the OL at all. Cam needs all the time he can to make his reads or he will get antsy on his feet and try to do it all.  It may get some highlight reels but it is not what is needed for sustained victory.  Until he has time to make his reads and settle down in the backfield he is going to struggle finding any WR or TE downfield.

At 26 there will be better value BPA with OL then at WR or TE.  If in the 2nd a top pass catcher is available and he is high enough on the board the Panthers should go all in to get that player.

Looking to Buffalo (because that is what I do) there is a young guy, Lee Smith, entering his third year in the league, 2 with Buffalo and before that drafted by NE.  He was considered the best line blocking OL in the 2011 draft.  With the Bills being rather deep at average players at TE it is possible he is released.  If he is it might be worth trying him out as a 2nd TE to help block in Carolina.

edit:  Want a project and a strong ass TE?  Joe Don Duncan.  Benched 34 reps.  Went to school 6 years, been playing a while.  Might be worth it for a later round pick.

Also, I don't see any way TE is an option this year.  Now that we signed Dixon and McNeil, it's just not a need.  But we do need at least depth in many other spots.

Gettleman already told you we are going BPA which accounts for needs but doesn't focus on it.  The only way to get better is draft the best guy regardless of position.  Drafting Short wasn't a need after we went for Star in the first while CB was a big need.  So he has already shown that need won't be the major factor and I don't know that we couldn't or shouldn't improve on those two who haven't shown much last year. Besides if we drafted for biggest need we would likely double down at tackle in the first 2 rounds.

No line means no time for check downs. You can had 3 all pro wr's or te's. Wont matter if m o protection.

Tight ends block and chip the end before going out in coverage meaning 2 good TEs will help with blocking both on passes and running the ball.

I think the only way we go CB before either WR or OL is if all viable options for 28 at those positions are gone, and I just don't see that as a possibility.  Especially with Kouandjio's knee problems apparently proving to be a false alarm and Moses, and possibly Bitonio, being a legitimate 1st round option.  Not to mention Robinson and Latimer putting their names in the hat for the 1st round according to many.  I just don't see any way 7 OT's and 7-8 WR's will be taken before our pick.

And Rivera and McDermott have proven their defense works with mediocre CB's behind our front seven.  More than likely, I think we will look for a CB in the 3rd or 4th round, then look to next year to focus on CB.  So my guess is we go 1st - OT, 2nd - WR, 3rd - WR/OT, 4th - CB, 5th - 7th BPA between DE, WR/OT, S, OLB, and possibly QB.

Who has the list? THE MASTER LIST? The one with all the draft picks listed in order by adding, subtracting, multiply, divide, analyze, and basically digest every piece of information on every player? I mean? Is it really that hard to take the 28th best player? One way or another, shouldn't that guy be a pretty good player? I can't wait to see/meet him.

How do you narrow it all down? I want one of those top 4WR. One of those top 4LT. Or even one of those top CB. So when your pick comes. And you have 4 guys still on your lists. Oops. "Hey guys, maybe next year we try something different? Mkay?"

Or, do we make our own, first-worst, draft list. Then we know where we are going, and can put a plan in place. Then the guy you wanted goes elsewhere. Oops. "Hey guys, let's cross that one off he list. Mkay?

Now, I ain't no Nosetradomus or nothing', but, um, where was I? A mix of exp., gut feeling, soul searching, mind numbing, time consuming, procedure that embodies what being a football guy entails. With the resources at his disposal? And the general overall philosophy of the franchise in the balance. Gman will make, the best player available, a new Panther.

We are in a truly unique position. Pretty much, the kid we draft with pick #28, will more than likely be a day one starter. Gman has said he wants starters in the 1st 2 rounds at least. Nothing really unique there. I know...Where ever this kid plays. He will make us better. I got nothin' after that. What do I know anyway.

IF WE DRAFT

Oline. He instantly becomes our best lineman.

WR. Same as above. But he is a WR. Not a lineman.

RB. Ouch.

QB. Giggle.

Oh and TE. A TE this talented instantly upgrades our passing attack. And probably signals the official start of the Shula and the 2 TE set era.

Dline. Kid better be a total beast to win playing time. It ain't happening this year. Sorry.

LBers. If he can cover, blitz, tackle, and stay out of Keek and TD limelight. Sure. Otherwise. No.

CB. He instantly gives our secondary some cred.

S. Same as above. But, once again, it is a totally different position. Right?

In my mind. WR, CB, and OL seem to be the areas of greatest need. Do we highlight them in our process of evaluation? Making these positions a higher priority over say, that LBer kid could be good.

LONG story short. I see a lot of skill position playerz in this years picks. And Oline guys too. I got ahead of myself there for a moment. Listening to Bill Withers get me going.

Unless you're referring to cryptic nonsense, you might want to take that big stick out of your ass right about now. Shockey was a headache for The Giant organization for being a jerk and a dumbass.

Take that 'reading comprehension' argumentative point elsewhere. Reading comprehension warrants an actual intelligent response and/or debate.

Shockey was an asshole but he wasn't a crackhead like Lyerla is which is what I specifically stated in my first response to you, how much clearer do I need to be for you?
