Anybody ever been to a NHRA drag race?

Taking my 9 year old up to Zmax for the 4 wide nationals. I've been to NASCAR events but never NHRA. How long do races last? Are they back to back? Is there a lot of down time? You can get into the pits I hear, is that worth it?

The pits, yes.  Worth it.  So cool to see that stuff up close.

 

There can be a lot of down time.  The down time can vary for various reasons.  Between heats might not always be that bad but between sessions can be a little boring.  15 minutes between drags is not absolutely unheard of but may happen from time to time.  Usually its 5 min or so.

 

They can last 2 to 3 hours depending on misc. events - like wrecks or incidences which come up.

 

It's a beautiful day, definitely go.  You can walk around a lot and just enjoy the culture a lot, too.  It's a bit different then the normal NASCAR cult fans.

 

TAKE EAR PLUGS.  YOUR KID IS 9.  IT COULD GET TO BE A BIT MUCH FOR THEM.  FOAM EAR PLUGS.  IF YOU HAVE EAR MUFFS TO GO ATOP, MIGHT WANT TO CONSIDER THEM, TOO.

Yeah very loud, advice above is accurate. I went yesterday but have been a few times before. Always fun and crazy to see how powerful those cars really are. Today is finals so it wont last very long. All rounds are elimination rounds while other days have been heats and qualifying. Full access to pits is really cool and you can meet all the drivers as they normally come out for autographs and pictures. (Not as much on Sunday since it is finals)

I went 2-3 years ago. It's awesome. Not nearly as long as a NASCAR race. It's loud though. Every ticket is a pit pass but there's no alcohol aloud in the pits. Just be careful not to get ran over by John Force and his scooter.

Yes, absolutely - ear plugs are needed. I know you're there now but if you read this you need to get ear plugs.

Glad I saw the ear plugs post. The top fuel guys at the beginning are fuging LOUD. Every bone in our bodies rattled. Amazing power. Son loved it.

Drag races are awesome. I went to the IHRA race at Rockingham years ago and loved it.

I wanna get to Concord and eee the four wide and haven't done it.

Yes, it's loud as poo.

My dad was a drag racer back in the 80's he ran in the semi-pros class, I have been to more races then I can remember. I always enjoyed it.
