ESPN's Newton Revisits Bell Topic: Avoid if you don't want more (Cow) Bell

I think we draft a future LT.  1st round.   I also believe that OTA/Mini Camps/Training Camp starts with Bell on the left side.  It will be his position to lose.   If no one beats him out then Rivera and Gettleman's belief that he will be better on the left side than the right is true.    If he loses it don't be surprised if he loses both positions and ends up 2nd string LT.

Let's suppose for a moment that the front office actually didn't believe in Bell.

 

What would people expect them to say publicly?

 

"We have confidence in him" or "OMG WE'RE SCREWED WE'RE GONNA GET KILLED THIS YEAR CAM WILL NEVER SURVIVE!!!" :blink:

 

Does the team leadership really believe in him like they say they do?  No idea.

 

But the one thing I do know is that if they didn't, you sure as heck wouldn't hear about it.

Yes this time of year, we get a bunch of political statements from the team and crystal balling from the media and we are supposed to make sense of it all. 

 

I am not sure that "how much we offered Collins" is a statement in defense of Bell.  Gettlemen does not play hard in the first inning of free agency and we had just tagged Hardy.  The fact that he went after Collins at all is more telling than what we offered him.  Compared to the rest of the T crop in Free agency, Bell probably is right there with them--THAT is probably what they mean.

 

For Newton to suggest that whomever we draft will play RT is a reach.  For him to suggest that Rivera and Gettlemen have declared Bell the starting LT in April is a reach.  He is number one on the depth chart in April. 

 

The one factor that is probably significant in terms of insurance is that he was given that $2.5+ million salary for 2014.  However even that is nothing more than a desire  not to lose both starting Tackles in one off-season.

 

I would love for Bell to come in and become an elite LT.  I would love to be drafting a RT right now.

My final observation is that we need two tackles and the moving Bell to the left side does not really accomplish much.

 

Yes, the only real hope here is that Bell becomes a much better player on the left side, and I think that is highly unlikely.  He got looks there in preseason.  If he was that much better at LT than he is RT, the team should have moved Gross to RT-----

If you look the wage scale we paid him about what an average rt makes or little less.

 

My hopes are that they see a year over year improvement in Bell and feel he is capable of starting but my untrained eye does not see him as either an average RT or LT.

That was a tongue-in-cheek comment, a hypothetical statement--but my point--if Bell is a different player (as they seem to suggest) and Gross, a player in the last year of his career (most insiders knew that-frankly, he made the pro bowl by default), would you not  position players where you get the most out of the tackle position if Bell was that much more effective at LT?  I was not suggesting it, but I was trying to make a point about how they really feel about Bell on the left side.

I disagree, I think last year's draft is a perfect example of BPA philosophy at work. Star was a no brainer at 14, no one expected Short who was a fringe first rounder and was another BPA. Too much value in either to pass up, luckily for us they also filled a glaring need.

I think we'll see similar circumstances in May.

bell sucks and has shown slight improvement it would take a big leap for him to become a decent starter

Well probably get one of two tackles relatively high in the draft if the board is right. Need an influx of talent at that position bad

Everyone should have realized when Bell got a 2nd round tender that he was going to be starting at Lt for this season. Team is looking at Rt in the draft and might wait till the second/third pick to do it at.

Pretty much anyone that's drafted at Ot is going to be playing RT for season one. Expect Bell at LT and relax
