Panthers meeting with...a center from USC

Lemme guess, Kalil's contract was backloaded and saturated in signing bonus money too so that figure is just going to go up, right?

IIRC, next year is the worst at almost 12 M, but it goes down a bit after that.

It's still a very large number though, and one that we probably can't afford if we are trying to get Cam and Luke UC for the long haul.

Glad DG is giving him a look.  A center that can play guard would be a good addition.

If I recall correctly, Hartwig was our center when Kalil was drafted.  It wasn't a need then but it worked out great for us.  A few OL gems inevitably drop into the third / fourth round.  Would love for us to find some great value in the middle of the draft.

"Perhaps his biggest test of the season came against Notre Dame defensive tackle Louis Nix, a first-round talent, and Martin played an excellent game. He showed the strength to hold up against Nix and had some nice blocks where he got movement out of Nix at the point of attack - a rare sight....For the NFL, Martin looks like a future starter at center. He has good strength to open holes in the ground game with surprising quickness and agility to hit blocks on the second level. Martin has the size to match up on heavy nose tackles and shouldn't get pushed around."

Well it wouldn't be so bad if we didn't keep restructuring him. Original signing bonus caused a hit of $3.6m per year, two restructures (1 this past February) and a 2013 option bonus added another $2.55m per year in already-paid-but-haven't-hit-the-cap-yet bonuses.

Dead money outweighs cap hits for next two years, then the contract wraps up after 2016. 2017 and 2018 are dummy years.

I see us drafting four hog mollies (OG, OT, C, DE/DT). Get ready for a non-sexy draft.

this/. ive already prepared myself, i just hope dave gets a early (1-3) WR to mix in with the lineman(plus one CB)

Remember how awful Kalil was as a G?! That was so shocking as Centers are usually converted guards.

B Buckner is usually pretty critical about Kalil saying that although he has great second level athlletic ability he does not dominate the line like he is paid. He talks about other NTs pushing him back and that he is ideal in a zone blocking scheme not a power run.

I love Kalil but I agree that Kalil is not as dominating player like he is paid like. Usually Centers are not paid so handsomely. Most of the elite LTs got 8-10 million this offseason.

In other words...i would start to look for the NEXT center who is versitile to play G now.

huddle knowledge is strong in this thread. kalil is NOT the best C and until recently he was the highest(by far) paid. herniay just overpaid by 5-20% on all his big contracts. like dave has stated, you overpay, you get in trouble. you have to find a happy medium between insult and overpay, and create a environment where player WANT to play for less. like im sure the contract talks are going with cam......cam agent-"he needs 27 million per" dave-"if i pay him that, i couldnt afford to pay WR/OL/TE min wage and cams' numbers will suffer and he'll lose all his marketing appeal" agent cam"....well thats true....." dave- "heres a fair figure for all and ill project him/get weapons with 10 million room"
