Would Gettleman have drafted Cam?

there was no player in that draft who could make the difference on a team the way cam could. aj green might be ridiculously talented, but his impact on the field is pale in comparison to what cam can do.

when you looked at his season at auburn, you see a player who was in control. he controlled himself (very few turnovers), controlled the game (their success was directly tied to his performance), he controlled the other team's defense (he couldn't be stopped), and he essentially controlled his team (he was their motivation and the reason for their ability to comeback from deficits so often).

he was known by those who actually coached and worked with him that he had a great work ethic that transferred to his teammates.

gettleman understands that the QB is the most important position on the team and there was no avilable options who could carry a team the way cam could. that season in that draft, newton was a no brainer pick. he was the obvious one.

and yo gabba gabbert over him? lol, he played as nervous in college as clausen did as a panther and was very limited in what he could do and his lack of success should be of no surprise to anyone who watched him and i'd have to believe that gettleman would have seen tht.

would newton 100% have been the pick if gettleman was here? i fully believe so, but whether that's right or wrong, what difference does it make? what newton has done on the field since day one and the obvious growth as a player, a leader, and a man has made him the obvious choice as the man to have as the franchise QB for years to come and, despite gettleman's apparent lack of ability so far to surround him with weapons, doesn't take away from gentleman's conviction that cam is the right QB for this franchise and his faith in him and his abilities may be the very reason he hasn't done more. cam can do more with less and his abilities make it easier to build other areas up first and then add more weapons and protection after the rest of the team is put together. a weaker QB would have needed much more than cam has to achieve anywhere near the production cam has.

Cam Newton

Luke Kuechly

Greg Hardy

Charles Johnson

Ryan Kalil

Greg Olsen

These are the guys along with Star, that Gettleman is building this football team around. So give the man some credit, he was terrible with contracts but he gave us and Gettleman an outstanding core to work with.

Luke and Cam are great but it nearly impossible to screw up a top 10 pick.

While Hardy and Johnson are great gems his drafts overall were filled with players that are flipping burgers now

Gettleman hasn't done squat nor put his signature on this team. This is a Hurney core carrying a bunch of misfits Gettleman brings in. Until Gettleman can sit in front of a high demand FA and convince him to sign with us he'll never get his peers' respect and this team will always be the underdog that overachieves.

It will be a few years because we don't have any money and still need to reup Cam and Luke. We are in cap jail until probably 2016. It's not a matter of convincing anyone. Players actually want to play here.

I get what you're saying, I'm just not sold that he would have picked Cam. Just imagine what Cam could do if he had the talent that Dalton has around him. And their defense is just as good as ours to go along with the talent they have on offense.

There really isn't a comparison as far as who is a better GM, far too early to tell. I think we can all agree that Star fell to Gettleman. And KK was a solid pick up, but better picks could have been made. AJ Klein has a promising future, but the other two were no factors. Let's not try to compare the two on who's better, way too early.

I think it is too early to judge the draft picks that Gettleman brought in but it isn't too early to judge which one is a better negotiator which is a big part of finding talent.  Hurney hit on first rounders but wasn't so good trading up or picking guys in the middle rounds.

Plus Hurney didn't have the ability to let guys walk away and negotiate toughly.  Gettleman might not be great down the road but letting Hurney go was the right move and he wasn't the future.

But the Bengals are one of the few teams with the least turnover (at least since 2011 http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap2000000340908/article/which-teams-have-had-the-most-nfl-roster-turnover) and what that means is that they draft well and can afford in every draft to load whatever side of the ball. If we keep drafting well, we will get there.

so what's your point? and don't say its just for discussion.

whether you are convinced doesn't matter, esp. since you come into the discussion with an idea that gettleman isn't sold  on cam and isn't interested in seeing him succeed which is why he hasn't built the offense around cam.

Which is why he was fired, but I just wanted to point out that he brought in the players that Gettleman is building his team around. And also the Browns and Raiders have a top ten pick every year and doesn't help them at all.

READ FIRST-This not a thread bashing Gettleman. This is not a thread praising Hurney.

It seems like in every thread many people love to continuously throw Hurney under the bus. The man deserved to be fired, but he also should get credit for bringing in the foundation of this football team that Gettleman has the opportunity to build upon. I'm talking about

Cam Newton

Luke Kuechly

Greg Hardy

Charles Johnson

Ryan Kalil

Greg Olsen

Hurney had some good drafts, but the one he did by himself without Fox's input:  Clausen, Lafell, Edwards, Norwood.....

Hurney sucked because he paid too much and was manipulated by players' agents.  He used contracts to reward for past performance instead of paying for anticipated future services.  The Delhomme deal was a joke.  He was emotional and attached to the players.  Mistake.  When the Panthers were 2-14 and he had about $67 million in cap room, he overspent and used it to preserve the core of a 2-14 team--Gettlemen would have cleaned house.   So today we have a bunch of dead money people want to blame Gettlemen for because it was wiser to cut players and pay them than it was to allow them to play and lose every game.

Let's be honest: If I were the GM, I would have picked some gems over 10 years.  How did he do at key positions?  WR?  DT?  CB?  S?  Your list shows me very safe picks-

O I believe he's sold on Cam now, but I don't believe that he was when he took the job, which is why he slow played the offense when he got here and why he's overhauling it now.

My point is that people should realize Gettleman has the benefit of a young core already in place before he arrived. He didn't have to start from scratch like most GM's do. Any new GM will tell you the hardest thing to do is find a qb. He not only inherited a great one, but also got Luke as well. The cap sucked, true but things could have been much worse for him. Who knows what he would have done with that #1 pick, because not every GM would have taken Cam.

Can we not make this a bash thread please. I don't want this thread to turn into bashing Hurney or Gettleman. Gettleman still has time to get things done, and until I see how things play out I'm done bashing him. Hurney is gone and bashing him won't do any good, he left us in a bad situation financially, but any GM will tell you he left a damn good core.

The question I feel is very legitimate, go back to before that draft and not everyone was as sold on Cam as they are today, including many Huddlers. We all see that Gettleman clearly has the patience to wait things out so there is no guarantee he would have drafted Cam just because we needed a qb.

Hey guys I'm not gonna bash gettleman and not praising hurney but hurney put these 6 players on the team and gettleman didn't, and we don't need to talk about the other guys who are overpaid and draft mistakes that hurney made but I want to discuss this hypothetical scenario that I created and prove to you all that gettleman wouldn't have picked cam but I'm not alluding to my belief that one is superior over the other. Does that sum up the rules of this thread?

Again which is why he was fired. I don't think Cam was a "safe" pick. He had/has a very high ceiling but he damn sure wasn't a safe pick. He wasn't Andrew Luck coming out of college. I don't think Luke was a "safe" pick or popular one with Beason on the roster. Luke didn't get to become Luuuuuuuuke until he was allowed back into his natural position due to Beason getting injured.
