Would Gettleman have drafted Cam?

O wow thanks for the info. Ya i didn't read the previous posts. I did not realize how wrong media outlets had it.

No Probs.  :thumbsu:

Sometimes we get lazy having to re-write (especially in all that detail) stuff we wrote here previously. So I'm guilty! Lol

Yeah man. The Panthers; NFL/NFL teams, investigators and scouting services really did their homework on Cam PreDraft, seemingly speaking to and looking at everything, everyone (on and off the field) down to the most minute, finite details, going back to high school! Sheesh, maybe even Junior High School/Intermediate, if I remember correctly!?

The general sports media (especially Cable TV commentators): Well, they were a whole "Notha" story (the less said about them, the better). :thumbsd:  They played us. Lol.

Personally, I do not know how you can spend 10 minutes with Cam and not have your answer.  I think his dad and the money demands, the computer thing, etc were legit red flags, but I think even then he had more on the ball than most college athletes.  He has grown in three years, and a person who thinks they are already "an Icon" deep down inside would not have worked as hard as he has, would not have listened to the vets and coaches like he has---he would be like Kaepernick--making second contract demands (as if he is elite--he is not, the niners are) and perhaps crowning himself with a feeling of entitlement that may lead to a bit of legal trouble down the road.

I blame the cutting of Steve Smith.

Fanbases of more successful teams have seen plenty of popular older players let go in their lifetime, even ones that could still contribute, for various reasons.  It's just a part of the business.

On the flip side, our fanbase is used to "loyalty" being the word of the day, even though it's been shown time and again that the kind of loyalty Marty Hurney practiced was hurting the team.

If you want to build a perennial contender in the NFL, you can't "think" with your emotions.

I remember when FA first started. The only players involved were the top prize type of guys. The rest just seemed to sign with their respected teams. Or, because of the no interwebz form of communicating, news of movement wasn't so forthcoming. Then in the late 70s early 80s it blew up.

Anywho. Lots of young members of a franchise still in its infancy. Never thought I would be a part of that. Grew up in Mi., and always took those allegiances with me. Then just happen to be living in Spartanburg when a local yokel starts up his very own team. Being in from the get go has given me a new appreciation for football.

Watching your favorite player leave never was, and never will be, easy. Just pick a new one, and away we go.

I'm pretty sure he would have. Contrary to what many were saying on here at the time, choosing Cam was easy and would be the smart move. Especially, considering the season he had at Auburn and most could see Jimmy wasn't going to pan out. Gettleman would have chose Cam.

Cam wasn't a once in a generation type QB. He is the prototype of the next generation.

No GM worth his salt would pass up the opportunity to ride off into football glory on the back of Cam?

With our Defense. All you need to do is help Cam. He gots this.

O wow thanks for the info. Ya i didn't read the previous posts. I did not realize how wrong media outlets had it.

A couple of other tidbits/fill in the blanks I didn't mention:

Rivera said, the Panthers were very impressed with Newton's ability to handle pressure due to the crazy media, fan booing/insults surrounding the alleged allegations with his father/Miss, with Auburn producing an undefeated season.

Cam, his family members and friends had all said, 'he learned from his mistakes at Florida'. The Panthers added, how open he was open to discuss his travails at Florida and not hide from it. This impressed them, showing openness, maturity and growth on Cam's part in their eyes.

Cam's father surprised them as well (though he's not Cam/The subject/draft pick of course). Nonetheless, the Panthers were impressed how his father gave them no trouble when they wanted to talk to him. The Panthers also felt Cam had a tight family structure, with good grounding, high achievement, discipline and continual learning/life lessons being stressed and prized. That's something not often discussed in the media due to the alleged shake down request by his dad to a Miss Booster.

So all in all, the Panthers knew Cam had the physical, football ability, instincts (via their film review and breakdown; speaking with his coaches, along with combine related measurable's), and burning desire to win,  be a great player/worth of the #1 pick. They just had work ethics, character, and coachability questions to address at the beginning of their search/due diligence.

Cam, via all his various coaches (particularly from JC on), players, family, friends, classmates, teachers, associates, wives, children and observers), passed with flying colors as far as we know. They all said he had a great work ethic, burning desire to win, coachability, responsibility and leadership at every level (including high school, but particularly from his Junior College sojourn onward).

The story of his Juco coaches young 3-5 yr old daughter (If I remember her age correctly) was particularly touching, though not unusual for Cam. His Junior College coach was so supportive of Cam Newton AS A PERSON (forget even as a National Championship winning Football player, QB for his JUCO team), both he and his wife made a point to stress how nice Cam was to their young child/daughter and how much she in return adored Newton. Remember/as you can imagine, Newton spent a lot of time around the coaches family. I'm sure there would have been times, when even some of us here at The Huddle would have been [like] "Beat It Kid!". However, Cam reportedly took the time and effort to make her and others feel special on the regular.

Come to think of it. Cam could have treated his JUCO year as a way station on his trail back to the big time (Div 1A). Nobody was really looking right? Lol.... However, he reportedly treated those around him with respect, friendliness and patience. These are the stories the Panthers and investigators were repeatedly hearing/finding as they performed their due diligence on Cam Newton as a Man, football player, and prospective #1 pick.

Everything was the complete opposite of what the media and TV folks were saying/wanted you to believe. Go figure!   :phew:

It's hard to say. When you look at the top ten guys that went in 2011, eight of them have made at least one pro bowl. Those names include Cam, Von Miller (LB), Dareus (DT), AJ Green (WR), Peterson (CB), Julio Jones (WR), Aldon Smith (LB), and Tyron Smith (LT). Funnily enough JJ Watt went 11th that year.

So would Gettleman have gone for someone else?

Maybe. An argument could have been made for the selection of Von Miller, Dareus, or even Green or Jones to go first overall. But with the big hole at QB, I think passing on Cam would have been very difficult. Especially since the team didn't have a second round pick to take Dalton or Kaepernick, the other first round QBs were never legit first overall selections, and after them the next QB we could have selected was Ryan Mallet.

So for me, I think Gettleman would have taken Newton with the first pick unless he picked up a QB in free agency. I can't remember the best QBs available in the 2011 free agency, but I think it might have been Matt Hasselbeck...
