Worst draft picks since 2000 for every team

Spinderella Brown was awful.

Eric Shelton might be the worst.

2005 Carolina Panthers Draft...

Round 1 (14) S-LB Thomas Davis (star player)

Round 2 (54) RB Eric Shelton (did he ever play a single down here?)

Round 3 (79) OL Evan Mathis (let go; became a great player in Philly)

Round 3 (89) DT Atiyyah Ellison (didn't even make the roster)

Round 4 (121) QB Stefan LeFors  (great story, lousy player)

Round 5 (149) LB Adam Seward  (stuck around as a role player for a little while ; was he the one whose mom was a Bears cheerleader?)

Round 5 (169) OL Geoff Hangartner (became a contributor)

Round 5 (171) S Ben Emanuel (practice squadder)

Round 6 (189) DE Jovan Haye (let go ; had some good years with the Bucs)

Round 6 (207) G Joe Berger (let go ; still playing for the Vikings)

At least there is a pro bowler in that list, should certainly be another with TD.

Rumor and speculation. Neither Hurney nor JR has ever said this happened. One of many examples of a rumor getting repeated so much around here it becomes accepted as true.

Its well known around the league the panthers were seen as suckers in the draft. Remember last year they tried to scam DG and he hung up the phone on them.

If you were looking for our worst draft ever, it's probably the one in 98.  the one we got started by passing on Vonnie Holliday for Jason Peter.  Then followed that up with Chuck Wiley and Mitch Marrow.  Best pick outta that year was probably Donald hayes, and he really only contributed one season that i can recall.

Hurney's second draft (03) netted us Jordan Gross and not much else.  There was one year wonder Ricky Manning Jr. in the third for what that's worth.  Traded up in the second that year to get Bruce Nelson four picks before the Cards got Anquan Boldin.  Redskins took Derrick Dockery later that round.  Not sure nelson ever played a down either.

For the 2010 season, there's pretty much nothing to write home about except Greg hardy in the sixth.  Follow that up with the 11 draft that got us Cam Newton and pretty much nothing else except Kealoha Pilares who's kind of still here but probably won't be come September.

Can't help remembering when we used to brag about how many draftees we kept under Hurney :(

When he told that story I remember thinking "we must have a real reputation going around now".

Also remember Gettleman famously saying "You must be braindead to think I'd take a deal like that."  I winced :(

Dexter Jackson was in fact on our practice squad for at least a year, The perfect example of how 4.29 at the combine doesn't always translate to worth a damn in the NFL.  I'm not sure I'd call Anderson our biggest bust of the last second, however he was a first round pick that showed potential and was a idiot and got suspended for two years back to back.

Shelton and Brown are by far bigger busts.  Shelton was given even opportunity to develop, and had next to no pressure on him with Foster/Davis in front of him.  Brown just proved that every small/fast defensive end can't be Mathis or Freeney, guy just got owned by every tackle.  I do remember him making a few plays last year for Dallas however, so he is still around.

Rahsard Anderson is far and away the biggest bust since 2000.  12 games and gone.

Every team has a collection of poor picks, and when you look at the ones Hurney made you'll find that he was remarkably average at drafting after the first round.  By that, I mean his picks in every round stuck around as long as the average GMs did.  For every Dwayne Jarrett there was a Ryan Kalil.  It was the first round where he was particularly good.  I think that's as much a testament to his scouting department, which Gettleman kept, as anything.

Ever feel like most of our drafts in the late 90s were disappointing?  98 was awful, but it seemed like every year we would maybe get one good player and a bunch of JAGs.  2009 turned out to be particularly disappointing too...

Lets see hurneys 2nd round

Pro bowl: Kalil

Good: Marshall

Busts: Everyone else

So no, this is not "for every kalil there is jerrett" this is the accuracy of throwing darts at the draft board.
