Inside Slant: Running back cliff after age 27

Age has almost nothing to do with it. The reason they wear down at such a young age is because of the physical beating their body takes. The human body isn't designed to sustain the abuse a running back endures.

Generally speaking a 27-29 year old man is at the peak of his physical stature, not a 21-23 year old who is a very young adult. The reason younger backs are more productive is because their body doesn't have any wear on it.

Williams is fine. He has a few good years left in him. The o-line is the only problem with our running game right now. Career carries compared to some of the premier backs in the league, age by midseason.

Tolbert, 28- 496 carries

Stewart, 27- 866 carries

Williams, 31- 1,370 carries

McCoy, 26- 1,149 carries

Johnson, 29- 1,742 carries

Lynch, 28- 1,753 carries

Peterson, 29- 2,033 carries

Gore, 31- 2,187 carries

Which is why I keep saying give him the ball more.

I'm thinking Gore has got to hit a wall soon...like this season. Amazing he's kept it up for so long though.

Age has plenty to do with it....father time is father time.  Carries or not, father time still comes into play.

WIlliams is fine in the since he could techincally play for a couple more years.  Issue is he should be a near vet minimiun RB for those years.  He is a basically a just a guy now...

Age and carries both factory in to decline in production but I think we can all agree that D-will and Stewart very little in game wear. Stewart has never had more than 215 carries in a season and williams has only had 200 plus carries 3 times in his career. Look at a back like Lynch who has rushed for 200 plus carries over 5 times in 8 seasons, he is a back I would expect to fall off a cliff.

Jamaal Charles, Adrian Peterson, & Darren Sproles are the only active players with a higher yard per carry average than D-Will.

that isn't true.  They are leaving out all the young guys from the list you are using.

For example, CJ Spiller has a 5.1 career ypc, Demarco Murray has a 4.9, etc, etc.

That list is cherry picked.  Makes it sound better than it really means....All the young guys with nice ypc are left off.  Meanwhile, Williams likely will continue to fall as he ages finishing will just a number

Can we also agree that Stewart is injury prone and Williams entered the NFL more game worn than RBs do today?

Lynch isn't injury prone nor does he rely on speed/acceleration.....which makes him different than both our guys.   But father time will make Lynch disappear overnight.
