NFL Draft is a month out and I still have no Idea who we're looking at?

yes to both? if so then is that a product of that formula for success that they used and are we going down the same path?

I think people are getting too hung up on the fact that Gettleman was employed by the Giants.  Gettleman wasn't the GM there.  He was the PRO personnel guy.  He wasn't the guy making draft picks.  What the Giants did in the draft sheds little to no light on Gettleman's ideas and tendancies.  Gettleman's philosophies weren't shaped by Reese or the Giants.  He's been in the business WAY longer than his time with the Giants.  People talk about the Giants always drafting DL and never picking OL high and this and that and none of that means anything about us or Gettleman because those weren't his decisions.  For all we know Gettleman would have had completely different draft strategies than Reese did.

And in regards to your question, their formula centered around an incredibly overrated QB.  That was the root of their problem.  It was masked by dominant defense play (at the right times), but that defense has been breaking down without the correct moves to address the deterioration.  That, combined with poor decisions to try to address the weak areas (for one example, panic picking David Wilson when the Bucs traded up to take their guy ahead of them) is what led to their sucktitude this past year.

The draft never unfolds the way we think it will. Having said that, the way I think the draft will unfold tells me that we are jumping all over a top WR in round 1- I would make a list of WRs I think will be good #1s who can come in and make a huge difference.  To me, they are:

  1. Sammy Watkins
  2. Mike Evans
  3. Brandin Cooks
  4. Odell Beckham Jr
  5. Marquis Lee

When the 4th WR off this list is taken, I would move up and make sure that I grabbed one of these 5.  The reason?  The second-round WRs are solid, but either raw or just not as dynamic as the five guys above.   We don't have anyone who can play #1.  You could say that about LT, but I think there are 4-5 day two Tackles who could start.

You can argue that we need a T, but would you move up for Zack Martin?  I do not think I would.

I am no G-man fan but from what I have gathered I think his plan is longer term and don't think he would trade up just to get one of these WR's especially with the depth (how many times have I said that in the last 6 mos?) of the WR's in this draft.

I would think OL is more likely or a WR right where we stand. I may be wrong but I do not see a move up to get anyone. there are playmakers @WR all thorough this draft no need to move up for that. The nly way I see a move up would be for a lineman but don't know who that would be.

Why are you not a fan of Gettleman?

So far during his tenure here in Carolina we have won the division with a 12-4 record and his draft picks and free agency pick-ups of last season all played crucial roles in getting us back into the playoffs. Furthermore, he is slowly but surely righting the ship it terms of the salary cap problems Hurney left us in when he was fired.

What isn't to like, exactly? I'm not looking for 'fan' answers either like 'he released Steve Smith.' He has done everything he said he was going to do in terms of setting this team up for long-term sustained success.

Imma be honest. .if we cant land Watkins, Benjamin, Evans (who im wary of. reminds of David Boston) or Cooks I would like to see us go CB... A lock down CB would do wonders for the defense and Offense. .

Sent from my SPH-L710 using CarolinaHuddle mobile app

Evans us for real.

He won't be there for Gettleman to pick.

then that would go both ways as some are quick to credit him as the reason they were successful in previous years. The point being you can't take too much from what happened in NY as indicative of what he will do or how successful he will be.

Last year's first round went nuts at pick 3 when the Dolphins picked Dion Jordan

Gotta admit that was the most fun I've had watching a draft in years.

Wouldn't mind seeing something like that again.

Didn't they trade up to do it?

WHo is the wildcard this year?  They guy who some team reaches for and it screws everything up?

I am going to say Carr, but QBs are easy.  How about Ebron?

we'll see how he navigates through these tough times. I don't see wht he has done so far as that great considering the biggest boost to the team was getting Star in the draft.I think drafting him was a no brainer and not really a product of the presence of G-man.Let's just say I am holding my praise and awe of the man for a long enough period of time to get a good read.I don't like what he did with the WR's.and no I didn't like what he did with Steve Smith. You may not think that matters but I do. I don't see him setting everything up for long term sucess right now. That will be determined by how the Cam and Luke contracts turn out.If he overpays for them we will be in perpetual 1 year contract mode for a long time and things will get worse as we cycle through our veterans. and end up just coaching up the 1 and dones for other teams.

i do like trying to keep Greg Hardy and thought that was the right thing to do.

I think 12-4 was already here. We'll see if it is still here and if he can build a longer term stability.

Well we had like 8 or 9 OL on the roster with more than 2 minutes of game time. We had 0 WRs. The average age of our OL is probably about 26. The average age of our WR corps now is 30 or 31. We still need WRs.

We need both. I would put OL >>> WR

But you cant fill out both position this year. You got 2 big holes and 1 big patch in the form of a first round pick. DG got a bunch of tape to fix the WR hole and I am going to assume he is going to use his big patch on the OL. Hogmollies!

8 or 9 OL on the roster with more than 2 minutes of game time.  LOL at this.

How many of them do you actually trust? I dont care if they played at least 2 mins and the average age is 26. I care if they can contribute to the run game and protect cam as long as possible. How many of the 8 or 9 can do that? Kalil and maybe Amini?

Don't remember if they traded up or not.  I do remember everyone logged on this board saying collective "WTF"s through pretty much the entire first round

I'd love to see the Draft go down like that again.

    • Respectfully, I completely disagree. Last year we were:  32nd in Sacks. 32nd in Turnovers.  32nd in Rushing TDs allowed  29th in Scoring.  We were absolutely atrocious on defense last year and that was with a full stable of weapons in Derek Brown, Frankie Luvu and Brian Burns that played all 17 games.  Using yards per game as a metric to guage our success lacks the context that because our offense was so inept teams were not driving the length of the field, they were starting at their 40-50 yard line.  This year, our Defense ranks:  31st in Sacks. Tied for 19th in Turnovers  31st in Rushing TDs allowed 32nd in Scoring  His defense fails to get pressure, fails to turn the ball over and fails to stop the run. Three things you absolutely have to do to be successful in the NFL.  Denver meanwhile has not missed a beat without him.  If another team wants to hire him as a HC and the Panthers get two 3rds for it I'll wish him the best and pack his bags myself.
