Panthers sign Ed Dickson

I wonder something about these one year deals. I do understand the cap situation and these may be the only contracts that we can hand out but do you think those one year deals are scaring people. I mean, how can you have stability based off a one year deal? I know that the one year deals can also bring up your market value the following year if your team is successful (i.e. Ginn Jr). Any thoughts? By the way, I think this is a solid signing. I would love to see more two TE sets.

You also have to factor in familiarity as well. How quickly will he assimilate into our system? Gman has proven, so far, that he has a knack for bringing in guys on prove it deals. And they proved it. They wound up getting paid, albeit elsewhere, and we got solid play on teh cheap.

The longer Gman continues to hit on 2-3, and even 4 starters in the draft. These signings well diminish to a trickle. That's when folks will be fighting to get here. When we are 1, maybe 2 really good playerz from being really a legit contender. That's when the flashy hardware will start to come out. Big time playerz looking our way. Cuz we are fiscally sound and we win.

Also, those 1 year deals are double sided bandaids. We don't spend much money, and the player gets an opportunity to shine. Win win when it works. Rinse and repeat.

My thing with the one year deals is based on what happened last year, we might not be able to keep Dickson if he has a breakout year.

I actually wouldn't have minded a cheap two year deal.

Lot's of options to cover this scenario. But the obvious answer is that with Gman, we should be able to replace, with replace being the operative word, him the next year, just like we did this year.

Point being. With Gman. If he thinks you make us better, he will give you what he considers a fair deal. If you don't sign, we move on. If you do sign, welcome aboard.

YESSSSSSSSS!!!

FUGGING YESSSSSS!!!

DUNN DUN DUNN....DUN DUN DUN!!!

Now this is a FA signing that has me stoked!

Cason and Underwood - scrubs, IMO / good for depth

Harper - too much of a liability in coverage

J-Co and Avant - good signings for the short term but hard to get excited about two vets at the end of their careers. Like someone earlier in the thread said, it's like "loading up on 10 year old polo shirts at the thrift store. Nice!"

But IMO Dickson is an elite passing TE prospect just hitting his prime when he turns 27 as August rolls around. I realize he hasn't blown up / realized his potential in his 4 seasons in the NFL with a 25/26/27/28-year-old Joe Flacco, but Flacco sucks. I'm stoked to see what Dickson can do with Cam. I would not be surprised to see Dickson emerge as a Top Ten NFL passing-catching TE. I'm excited! I've been wrong plenty about prospects before (and maybe i had too much coffee), but spending just $730,000 to take a swing for the fences on an a guy with tons of upside hitting his prime like Dickson is good stuff. My only worry is that if/when he does great this season, he'll be leaving us to get paid like Ginn, Munnerlyn and Mike Mitchell did

The easy answer is that every year with an influx of draft picks, and UDFAs filling out the roster. These bandaid type signings will diminish over time.

After this year. We may truly know what our kids are going to give us. We may just be able to wheedle, our holes down to the bare minimum. That is when the true game changing FAs signing may come into play. An actual 4 year deal to get and keep a really good player.

We survived the kids age part one last year. All we have to do is survive one more year. With the way Gman has assembled the roster, and the draft yet to come, I feel pretty good about the START of the Gman era.

Nice. Looks like we will have some decent depth at the TE position. I think Dickson could end up being a solid #2 TE. Sure he has drop issues and can't block well but he can make plays after the catch and can open up our play book with 2 TE sets. Unless Williams ends up beating out Dickson for the backup TE spot I expect us to cut him and keep a blocking TE like McNeal or Jefferson as our #3 TE and if they can't cut it why not just cut them and resign Hartsock.

I actually believe that Gettleman has made some very solid FA signings for a great price.

this is how Ed Dickson did at the combine compared to some of the top big receiver prospects in this upcoming draft:

4.53 forty at 6-5/231 -- WR Mike Evans
4.59 forty at 6-4/249 -- TE Ed Dickson
4.60 forty at 6-3/220 -- WR Allen Robinson
4.60 forty at 6-4/250 -- TE Eric Ebron
4.61 forty at 6-5/240 -- WR Kelvin Benjamin
4.74 forty at 6-5/265 -- TE Jace Amaro

I like your enthusiasm.

T Thomas and Decoud now please.

And a long term deal for Hardy.

This. Mainly long term deal with Hardy.  We need a premier rusher for the future and he's already on the roster.  CJ probably won't be in the next couple years unless he takes a paycut.

Just to reiterate, the cap hits from these 1-year vet. min. deals we keep seeing actually get reduced to $570,000 + any signing bonus (not to exceed $65,000). So Cason, Webb, and Dickson have cap hits of $635k despite actually making $795k. And since only the top 51 contracts count, they each bump a rookie minimum salary ($495k) out of the top 51, so their net cap hit is $140k each.

Excellent infomation. thank you.
