Panthers sign Ed Dickson

For me, Dickson reminds me of a lesser Brandon Pettigrew.  Pettigrew came out of Okie St. with high hopes of being this receiving TE and nightmare matchup.  So far in Detroit, he's underachieved and been more of a blocker.  I think Dickson can shine here in the TE2 role and that check-down target for Cam.  I could see 500 yards and 5-6 TDs and move around pre-snap to create match up problems downfield between he and Olsen.  Solid signing.

Ravens fans are saying he's extremely unreliable and drops everything. Dunno if that's lost free agent bitterness or legit.

100% legit. I'm very familiar with a handful of teams, mostly because of my roommates. Ravens fans hate this guy. He has a severe dropping problem.

i think part of it is that when people have high expectations, they judge you a lot more harshly. Dickson was the #3 TE taken in the draft, ahead of Jimmy Graham, Aaron Hernandez, Dennis Pitta, Eric Decker, etc in the same draft (also ahead of Brandon LaFell in the same draft). And when you look how Pitta did, he did a lot better at catching than Dickson, despite being drafted lower:

Rec %  (receptions per target)

Dennis Pitta

2010 -- 20.0% (1 rec on 5 targets)

2011 -- 69.1% (47 rec on 68 targets)

2012 -- 66.4% (75 rec on 113 targets)

2013 -- 60.6% (20 rec on 33 targets)

Ed Dickson

2010 -- 50.0% (12 rec on 24 targets)

2011 -- 58.8% (57 rec on 97 targets)

2012 -- 65.9% (27 rec on 41 targets)

2013 -- 58.1% (25 rec on 43 targets)

but they are probably judging him too harshly. Compare Dickson to the following:

Jeremy Shockey in his year with the Panthers

2011 -- 59.7% (37 rec on 62 targets)

Vernon Davis

2013 -- 58.2% (57 rec on 98 targets)

Rob Gronkowski

2013 -- 59.1% (39 rec on 66 targets)

Owen Daniels (who replaced Dickson at the Ravens and was a Pro Bowler last year)

2013 -- 58.5% (24 rec on 41 targets)

Jason Avant

2013 -- 52.4% (43 rec on 82 targets)

also for comparison:

Greg Olsen

2010 -- 57.3% (47 rec on 82 targets)

2011 -- 51.1% (45 rec on 88 targets)

2012 -- 66.4% (69 rec on 104 targets)

2013 -- 65.8% (77 rec on 117 targets)

Jerricho Cotchery

2010 -- 51.0% (53 rec on 104 targets)

2011 -- 53.1% (17 rec on 32 targets)

2012 -- 63.0% (17 rec on 27 targets)

2013 -- 60.5% (46 rec on 76 targets)

yea that has nothing to do with drops or how ones hands are that is simply rec per target which isn't only on the receiver...

Nice find for a different debate though.

Panthers sign TE Ed Dickson (1 year, $795,000): C+ Grade
I can't grade this signing poorly because Ed Dickson will be making only about three-quarters of a million dollars and he fits a need as the No. 2 tight end in Carolina. However, Dickson has been a huge disappointment in his career, as he's a sub-par pass-catcher and a horrible blocker. The Panthers could have done better in terms of finding another tight end, but they also could have done worse.

What better tight end did they expect us to pick up for vet minimum?  Ben Hartstock had 0 catches last year as our second TE, so as far as receiving goes, it would be hard to downgrade that.
