LSU Pro Day

Landry is LaFell 2.0.

Zach Mettenberger had one of the best arms in college football last year, and a line that gave him time to use it. He made all his receivers look better. The difference between Landry and OBJ is OBJ also returned kicks, and shows off a good running ability in the open field.

That is one of the most ridiculous and uninformed comments I've ever read.

I think Landry secured himself as a mid 2nd to early 3rd round pick, leaning much more to mid 2nd.

40 times are overrated unless the guy is like 5'7" running a 4.6. Landry creates separation with solid route running and makes the tough catches with his above average hands.

Is he a #1 WR? No imo. The question then is do we already have enough #3 WR's with a possible #2 WR's to offset the need of someone like Landry.

I don't think you draft a guy in the second round who is a number 2 or number 3 before you even go to camp.  You go for a guy who can be a number 1 but might be a little raw or need some polishing so he starts out as your number 2 or 3 but has potential for a number 1.  If this draft were short on wide receivers then he might be a good second or third rounder but there are guys who because they are raw or played at a smaller school who have better athleticism, speed and measurables who will get drafted in the 5th round who are better values than Landry.  For example what can he do that Avant can't.  We need a complement to what we have not more of the same.

As for good routes and tough catches, that works in college where DBs aren't that physical and don't challenge you off the line or run 4.5s or better.  But pro DBs do and he is going to struggle somewhat I suspect.  Then again I could be wrong.

This is the time of year where everything is so over analyzed you just have to look at the games.  Landry would be a welcome addition.  Don't know about his draft stock though.  Anywhere from a mid-2nd to a 4th imo.

The WR position is not a 1 size fits all. Some teams have a great slot, others need a red zone option, and many are wanting the tall fast guy that can create mismatches with smaller CBs . The Panthers are unique in that we only have a couple of guys on one year cheap contracts and we need all types of receivers.

For the reasons I stated above I see Landry slipping some because many teams have that 2nd receiver that does not have great speed or jumping ability. I see him as a new and improved version of Avant.

To me the Panthers needs that tall fast all purpose receiver which many of these tier 2 receivers are.If we take a OT in the 1st I still see one of these guys in the second. Clearly we are not getting one of the tier one guys in the 1st.

I've been a big follower of LSU football for years, and when LaFell came out he had all the accolades that Landry is getting now.  He was also projected as a high second rounder.  He made clutch pass after clutch pass in the SEC.

Look up the scouting reports on LaFell coming out, and you'll see the same stuff about Landry, except they talked about LaFell's blocking more than Landry's.

OBJ is the star receiver on that team.

My wife and her family are from Louisiana. They're HUGE LSU fans. Which, in turn, makes me a LSU fan because I'm forced to watch all of their games. I haven't missed one in 5-6 years. If you really watched LSU games you would agree that LaFell is NOWHERE near Landry. The "it" factor is real and Landry has it. He doesn't hit the HR like OBJ does so people who follow stats are more attracted to OBJ, but Landry is the better receiver on that team. That being said...I think they're both going to be great. But the Landry to LaFell comparison is not a good one.

LaFell is 3" taller and was also know for inconsistent hands. A weakness was the inability to get separation.

Landry is also an active blocker, but doesn't have the drop issue. Look at the film, he catches everything. He's a quicker than fast guy who would excel in the slot and give Cam another sure handed receiver. He's also as tough as nails. He LIKES going across the middle and getting it done.

My wife went to LSU as well, we watch every game, even the ones that are shown on "The Ocho."  And I really do watch every game, and have since about 2003.  If you watch them with the sound up, you would have heard the comparisons last year from guys that get paid to watch the games and talk about it.  Not so much last year, but they stuck and they make sense when you watch both of them.

I think you're forgetting some of the big plays LaFell made while he was in college. I'm not taking anything away from Landry's college production when I make the comparison, as LaFell broke all kinds of receiving records while he was there.  But in both you have guys with lots of production but not top-end speed.
