Gettlemagic: Slicing the fat off the cap with WR salaries.

Gettleman is quietly doing an admirable job at managing the tight budget.  But like David Newton alluded to in his short piece, let's hope that the savings don't translate to a reduction in production on the field (and affect those damned 10 catches).

That brings the 2014 cap total of the three receivers the Panthers signed -- Jerricho Cotchery($1.7 million), Tiquan Underwood ($925,000) and Avant -- to $3,675,000.

That is $2,741,666 less than the combined cap value of Steve Smith ($2,166,666, Baltimore) ,Brandon LaFell ($2 milion, New England) and Ted Ginn Jr. ($2.25 million, Arizona), Carolina's top three receivers in 2013.

Smith alone was going to count $7 million against the cap this season before the Panthers released him. Carolina still had to pay Smith $5 million in salary and deferred bonuses, but long-term the moves have been a big savings.

Note that I don't think that this is necessarily a statement on G-mans overall thinking on the value of wide receivers in relation to the cap. He is just doing what he has to do, and his philosophy is fitting in with our current salary cap situation.

You have to come up with creative ways to keep the ship moving forward after you tag the hungry Kraken.

Gettleman:    "I tried my best to run away from you, you big motherfuger."

The Kraken:  "You're it, fat man!"

Gettleman:    "Don't worry, I got this!"

I've said this so many times I'm surprised I haven't been banned..

For what we want to do on offense, our current WRs fit the bill more than what he had last year. Two safety net guys for Cam, who will be where they are supposed to be and will 99/100 times catch the ball.

I have a feeling we will start seeing the surgeon, smart Cam really come out this season. Pick the defense apart without having to even look at his WR cause he knows where he will be every time, where as last season he had to throw it at his WRs due to their inconsistency rather than a spot the he determined by his reads.

Not saying cotchery/ avant are #1s, but will sure as hell come in handy in the slot when you need a conversion. Since Cam has two of these kind of receivers, we can go after that explosive, playmaking guys on first and second downs.

Like Ed Dickson. Is the best best option on third down? Not really, but on 1st aand 2nd down you can risk a drop for that big play

Having these two vets will be critical for Cam since he will miss most of the offseason activity.  I am sure he will be there, but just not throwing.  The vets will be very important and the explosive playmakers can come from the draft, as has been said.

When someone is a consistent route runner, its much easier to build chemistry than with a someone who is not

They are going to have to get used to seeing the ball out of Cams arm too...he has a rocket launcher...

If we sign Dickson I'd be especially worried about him and Cams lasers.

Perhaps. I will agree with you more when we draft a take-it-to-the-house play maker at receiver.

If Dickson actually signs with us, perhaps he can improve enough to actually become a reliable target in two TE sets---Cam's ultimate check-down option.   Dickson has the talent. He just needs to improve on the drops.  Surprisingly he had only four drops out of 43 targets last year.

Cam is going to be throwing so hard and accurate this year that all his throws will result in the football stuck in our receivers' face masks -- they'll just have to pluck it out

I don't want to turn this into yet another Steve Smith thread, but it's been noted that at this point in his career, Smitty is chasing numbers. It's possible that even though we may miss his production and fire, Cam may very well turn into the surgeon The Huddler mentioned if he truly leads the offense and has the freedom to throw it equally to all his targets, and isn't being constantly reminded by Smitty that he is open every play and should "get him the damn ball".

I think Cam would probably just like to be able to throw to a legit #1 receiver.

    • And he still has one more win and a $110M contract, go figure?
    • People looking at the offense negatively need to step back a minute and remember that expectations were mighty low this year. We have a lot of young guys and rookies. And our qb is a newby in the system he is in with a new coach who has never been a head coach and signal caller combined.  This is a work in progress so only an approach which recognizes incremental improvement is valid for best measuring where we are versus  demanding immediate success after a 2-15 campaign last year.
