Zod's Camp Insights

Its tough for me looking through the lens, I miss much of the action not around the ball. But...

- Charles Johnson was a standout today. He may push Brayton for starting left end by the start of the season if he keeps it up.

- The defense overall looked ill prepared and rusty though, I suspect it will take much time before the players settle into it and get their muscle memories working and not thinking about the new schemes so much

- Few new defensive drills today including an interception drill I had never seen before. The players seemed to enjoy it, whooping and hollering as each group got their turn.

- It never fails, every year some young CB gets a lesson taught to him by #89. They should thank him, because he gives his best each play and expects they do the same.

- Jordan Gross still takes a leak in the woods instead of heading to the porta jon, some things never change.

- Otah seems a lot more settled in and personable this year. Fairly quiet last season, seen joking around with other linemen this season. Good sign for chemistry.

- Compared to the first day of camp last season, today there was not as much of a spark, or a sense of urgency. Hard to put into words, but the overall feeling was more laid back.

- The OL did have a rough time with some of the fast new stunts in the drills, with the DL getting to the dummy QB a few times. Man, they were fast.

- Beason seems to have settled into the leader role a bit more, rallying his guys and getting them focused between plays.

- Moose looks to be in what might be the best shape his has been in for a while. Looks like he has been hitting the training program hard this offseason.

If I think of more I will add to it...

Was he just great in the pass rush or was he looking great at run stopping as well?

I'm hoping he continues to improve a lot, it seems this kid has the motor and heart to do good things...

That's what was said last year... hard to believe he would look in even better shape this year. Great to hear, none-the-less..

Good stuff.

Strange about the urgency. Is that a concern, do you think?

When I got back from the first day last year I wrote that I had no concerns about Jake and that the team looked to be playoff bound from first impression.

Jake looked good again this year, but not so sure about that second part.

Its just one practice, take it for what its worth.

Both. He was in the backfield a bit disrupting the run game before it got going. I hope the fire lit under his butt stays lit.

    • I don't think Rodgers but probably not for the political reasons I bet a lot of posters are motivated by. I just think he is not the QB for the Panthers, at all.
    • Sun Devils just scored another TD on BYU, 14-0
    • It wasn't great but  the 2022 NYG won 9 of 16 games plus a playoff game. He had a 92.5 passer rating. 15 pass TDs 3200 yards, 7 rushing TD, 700 yards 6 fumbles 3 lost.  His first season he had 18 fumbles lost 11. Wow.  Anyhow he had problems in 2023 with injuries and didn't win poo before tearing his ACL. This year, no Barkley, not good, but you know.... these ACLs take a while and it was right and he throws right so pushes off of it.  I agree it doesn't hurt to let that guy compete cheap. You don't hand him the job like with Bryce or NYG with him.  When I look at what we have been saddled with, he doesn't look worse and has the physical advantage. So I don't get the umbrage given our situation. This "No we won't settle for anything less that the best" attitude and then taking Bryce Young was pathetic and I think that attitude brought us to where we are. That's where that poo gets you. Away from Mayfield, away from Darnold, even away from PJ - just to replace them with an inferior PJ.  At the same time I am not really advocating for the guy just looking at it objectively. It could be another guy with the same story. And yes the odds of him getting it are low but the numbers and performance from 2022 are for sure better than we see with Bryce even after a season of major propping him up with better players around him. Take a look don't take a look he fails or he doesn't fail...   to instead sit here and be happier with what we have is bullshit.
