Still waiting to hear on who we would replace him with.

 

No #1 WR currently on the roster? Well obviously the only solution is to get rid of your quarterback's current #1 receiving target.

 

You sure would make a great general manager.

There are a few things to like about Dickson as a player...

- He makes plays after the catch (46% of Dickson's yards came from yards after the catch)

- He may not catch everything, but if he does catch it; he isn't letting it go (he has 0 fumbles in his four year career)

- He knows where the sticks are (Dickson averaged 10.9 yards per catch and 64% of his catches went for a first down)

 

There are also things to not like about Dickson

- He drops a lot of balls (Dickson had a 16.67 drop rating, easily the worst in the NFL at the tight end position)

- He can't block (Dickson was used as a run-blocker in Baltimore but graded out as the worst starter at blocking among tight ends)

 

After a little research it appears that during Ed Dickson's best year (2011) he was actually operating out of the slot quite a bit and taking advantage of mismatches. The problem here is that Jason Avant will most likely be holding down the slot for the Panthers and since he is a possession receiver, he is a much more suitable player for the slot position.

 

So in conclusion, we have a player that sometimes makes plays and when he does they are somewhat big plays, but for the most part he drops one out of every six passes and won't provide any help in the running game. With that said, is even a vet minimum worth it? At the end of the day, every dollar counts and in my opinion Dickson just doesn't fit the bill.

 

The Panthers would be better served holding on to their money and drafting a big-bodied run-blocking tight end like C.J. Fiedorowicz along with developing Brandon "the specimen" Williams. Fiedo (who reminds me a lot of a young John Carlson) is an excellent blocker (watch his tape against OSU) and a solid red zone threat, which would allow the Panthers to throw out of two-tight end sets in the red zone (instead of running the ball out of them like always).

 

But hey, what do I know.

Personally, I'm interested to see how this affects Brandon Williams.

 

Williams has all the tools to be an all-around tight end.

 

Now if Dickson is signed, do the Panthers forego drafting a tight and hope that Williams can become the primary blocking tight end, or do the Panthers snag a tight end in the sixth or seventh round hoping to develop him into the primary blocking tight end thus cutting an end to Williams' short Panthers career. I'm under the impression that the Panthers would not carry four tight ends (Olsen, Dickson, Williams, Rookie).

 

Or finally, do the Panthers throw a curve ball and possibly move Dickson to the wide receiver position where he could take advantage of match-up problems. This would also allow the Panthers to continually develop Brandon Williams as well as possibly draft a blocking tight end or even keep McNiell as the blocking tight end.

 

Who knows... It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

      Sure there's a ton of transplants in Colorado now. But as far as Denver in particular goes the Broncos have also been around for 65 years. Someone moving to Denver is going to be far more likely to become a fan of the Broncos and even attend games versus someone moving to Charlotte and the Panthers. Like I said it's not just one single thing with us it's multiple factors.

      He's definitely getting better. It's fun to watch.  I've been getting killed for this take, but with the current state of college football, it just takes more time to develop a quarterback. I don't think it's a plug and play position anymore. I'm really not sure if it ever was. NFL offenses have always been substantially more complex than the college game, and the college game has simplified even more in recent years. Many college teams do not have a physical playbook anymore. That's just not the national football league.  Are there freaks who have success from day 1? Yes, without question. But so many of those guys are runners, and so many of those guys tail off. Is Bryce ever going to be Josh Allen? Probably not.  What I am seeing is a guy with complete command of the offense. He's checking into things at the line, making adjustments, and making timely throws.  He goes to David Moore a ton, because Moore is a consistent route runner. Bryce knows where he is and when he should be open. I think the guy with the "super processor" needs to be comfortable in the offense in order to do the "super processing." He doesn't have elite arm talent, and he is small of stature, but if he makes the smart play consistently, and he's willing to throw the ball downfield and not make mistakes, like he's starting to show, he's going to be a starter for a long time in this league, and it's not a position I'd spend draft capital right now.
