"Scootch over, first round WRs"---Allen Robinson needs room

I see Robinson being a great, consistent #2 throughout his career. I see Benjamin being either a top 10-15 #1 receiver, or a complete bust and out of the league in a few years (kind of similar to Britt but not personal/legal issues). Do you want to take the risk or the closer to sure thing?

There's like 10 guys that have been listed as possible first round receivers: Watkins, Evans, Lee, OBJ, Cooks, Matthews, Robinson, Benjamin, Latimer, Landry, and maybe I'm forgetting some.

Your typical draft has 3-4 first round receivers, so not only will some of these guys be available at 28, a few will likely still be there at 60.

The most first round receivers taken recently was 2009 with six, the year the Giants took Nicks late in the first and then Barden in the third. Wouldn't mind if Gettleman is considering a similar strategy this year.

Yes, I have heard all these guys mentioned in the first round at one time or another. I even heard Davante Adams name one time.  I think people are going overboard with first round grades though (just my opinion based on reading more crap than I care to admit).  I would be willing to bet that only 5 tops get drafted in the first round:

 

Watkins, Evans, Cooks, Lee, & OBJ.  I'm not exactly sue about OBJ, but we'll see what happens tomorrow during his pro day.

 

I do think that pickings will get slim by the third round though.

Robinson is one of my favorite WR prospects in the draft. He's often the guy that gets overlooked when the top WRs are discussed, mainly due to his 40 time at the combine.

 

But he has everything you look for in a future #1 WR; good size/speed ratio (6-2, 4.4-4.5 speed), good hands (one of the best drop rates among top WR draft prospects) & solid route runner and very good YAC ability. He also has great leaping ability (42-inch vert.) and high points the ball.

 

I personally prefer him over both Lee and Benjamin at the moment. He's this year's version of Keenan Allen, in terms of ability and skill set.

 

Food for thought: At age 20, Robinson is a more polished receiver than Kelvin Benjamin, who is nearly 3 years older (turned 23 in Feb.).

 

If we took him at 28 I wouldn't be mad at all. He's been consistently rated as a late 1st-early 2nd prospect throughout the process by most. If he made it to our pick in the 2nd, I'd be shocked but if I were Gettleman I'd turn in the card about as we did for Star last year.

Given the talent I could see six in the 1st round this year though it would be quite unusual

Nothing against Robinson, but it seems that the average Huddler thinks that all 32 picks of the 1st round will be wide receivers..

 

And none will drop to #28

Great point!  I think the fans are really going gaga over the WR crop this year.  I mean, there are a LOT of good players.  Which means that teams would be willing to pass on a WR if they could snag another position of importance or player (BPA) due to the depth of the WR draft.

 

Will we see another 6 go first round?  Who knows!  There are a lot of good players, BUT WRs only directly impact a handful of plays per game.  Linemen impact nearly all plays.  Heck, despite this being a passing league, a RB who carries the ball 15 times per game is going to have the chance to impact the game 3x more often than a WR who catches a lot of balls.  I realize talking about RBs in the Huddle is paramount to a religious offense, but they do touch the ball significantly more often than even the best WR.

 

I am really looking forward to seeing how the draft plays out.  The NFL is a copy cat league, and with the depth at WR (and OL), are we going to see some teams get desperate for the bigger DBs (hey seattle!) and push them up?  Are we going to see a premium placed on pass rushers again?  Heck, what about the QB question.  Is it a matter of finding the perfect franchise guy like a Luck or Cam at No. 1, versus taking the best player there?  There are still a lot of storylines to be played!

 

Oh, and for Robinson.  I'd be fine with him.  The more you look at these WRs, the more you see some themes emerging.  They are Big (Evans, Benjamin), Fast (OBjr, Cooks), or well balanced (Watkins, Lee).  Everyone else kind of follows those three trends fairly evenly.  I think it just comes down to picking that guy that will work in your offense.  That's up to the Panthers, and Robinson certainly looks good, just like so many other guys.

I like the wat Mayock summed up Robinson. Said he doesn't do anything great, he's not a great route runner, doesn't have great hands, but his overall make up is what makes him good. One of those "greater than the sum of the parts" type who you want on your team.

It sucks for these guys that they are coming out this year--a really stacked year.  This guy would have been a top 25 pick a year or two ago.
