Joe Person & Jonathan Jones putting our receiving corp into (Rivera's) perspective

This. All the back and forth arguing and debating won't change it. The picture isn't complete yet.

It's worth noting we didn't draft a WR last year, so if this group is better(according to some) why would Gettleman draft one this year?

I don't agree with this who's better talk going on right now, the games have to be played first.

Cotchery and Avant are not the future of the position. Gettleman knows this, even the worst arm chair GM's here on the huddle know this. You don't honestly believe that Gettleman will simply skip the position in the draft this year do you? That's a silly notion to say the least.

I'm calling it now. We have a lot of experienced receivers who can catch, as of right now. No big standouts. Not big time, homerun ball types. We will draft that. He will be great. Don't forget we still have Olsen and our backfield options to throw to. I think, with us not having an experienced downfield threat, nobody will draw CONSISTENT double teams. And that could be the death of some teams, because that allows us to dictate the matchups that WE want. Sure, if we get that downfield threat in the draft, he'll draw some double teams. But at the end of the day, unless he's a clone of AJ Green or Megatron, he's not going to be doubled the entire game. It'll be a rookie or two + a lot of complementary receivers. You want to run a coverage that has a safety over the top of somebody? Fine. Pick your poison, because somebody else will be open simply because you overlooked them on that particular play.

Not saying we'll necessarily be a big time vertical passing team this season. I'm just saying we'll have more opportunities to have flashes of that on drives with the receiving corps we have now. And, as stated earlier, all of this is hinging on playcalling. If Shula doesn't improve there, it won't matter who our receivers are.

Note: The stats are somewhat misleading, IMO. The systems that these other players in sort of dictate their catches per game. Glennon didn't set the world on fire, and V-Jax was his primary target. Of course Underwood didn't get a lot of catches per game. Antonio Brown WAS the passing game in Pittsburgh, so of course Cotchery didn't have a stellar stat line week-to-week. Philly, same thing. Avant was just a piece of the puzzle there, plus, they had Desean Jackson. Avant was a body on the depth chart. He could damn well be our #2, which means he could surprise us. We COULD, really, already get more than the 10 catches per game with this group as it is now. Throw in a WR in the first or second round, and we might have something to be excited for.

Maybe I'm just trying to remain too optimistic.

I wouldn't be surprised if we didn't draft a WR until round 3 or 4. I think we need one round 1, round 2 at the latest depending on what Tackle is there at 28. I just don't know how much they value the position with this 10 catches talk. People talk about how bad the position was last year, but Gettleman let that play out. Who's to say he isn't content to do the same here if the goal is to simply "replace" the production of the previous group.

Why wouldn't you be surprised after only one draft under gettleman. You have no idea and no one does. You CHOOSE to believe this.

I wouldn't read too much into the replacing catches comment. Gettleman and Rivera are well aware of our needs, and the situation, but they aren't going to go out here and make themselves appear desperate before the draft.

Gman and Rivera aren't trying to replace last year's WR nor are they looking for long term WR options from free agency.  They are trying to build a team from the draft, and fill in the gaps with cheap, replaceable parts from free agency.  That's what they are going to do year in and year out.  We'll be running lean for the first couple of seasons in this process, while we ride out crappy old contracts and have relatively high turnover rate.  Once we have a solid foundation complete, however, it's a matter of reloading with BPA every year and using free agency for depth.  That's how you build a dynasty, and that's exactly what they are doing.  You take a little pain the short term, if you can call 12-4 and division champions pain, but once you have the machine built it's just a matter of keeping it fueled.

This is why draft pundits saying we will take player x or y are full of crap.  We aren't drafting for need, we are drafting to building a strong foundation of the best players we can get.  We won't reach for a WR, because we don't need to reach for a WR.  We will take whoever is tops on our board when it comes to us, every time it comes to us.  It's exciting to see it happening, because we have a very, very bright future ahead of us.

Its kinda funny because I live in New York and people were HATING the Giants offseason moves a few years before they won those rings.  They had a patchwork line made up of vets, drafted JPP when they had tuck, osi and canty and made other seemingly silly moves from an average fan's perspective.  Gettleman didn't even have that much control in NY (although his opinion was highly valued from team scouting to player evaluation) but he's bringing that model here.  Over the next few years we are going to see a few more "steve smith-like" situations (although probably not quite in that manner).  We are going to lose some fan favorites, but if we do this right we'll stay stocked up on top talent, have quality role players and be able to actually sign some impactful free agents once all this dead money clears out.

Big thing is we need to stay competitive and relevant.  Keep giving guys a reason to buy into this model and be an attractive fit for FAs.

People tend to forget how good Cam can be even if he has avg players with good hands. A lot of what was wrong with last year was guys not getting open and when open dropping balls. Fix that and you have improved this team, I still worry more about keep Cam upright than WR talent this year.

Because we didn't. We aren't going to. You sound like CRA. Grab a thought out of the blue, and run with it.

As long as we keep adding talent through the draft, I will be happy. I don't care where that talent plays, as long as we continue to keep getting better.

We won 12 fugging games last year. Damm. What does this team have to do to make some of you folks happy?
