Joe Person & Jonathan Jones putting our receiving corp into (Rivera's) perspective

Person and Jones give a statistical look at what the Panthers are ostensibly trying to do with their receiving corps, much to many of our chagrin.  Rivera talked about replacing the 10 catches  so matter-of-factly, or perhaps apologetically depending upon how you look at it.  The problem for many of us is that as opposed to just trying to replace production, we should be trying to increase or at least improve production.  And, yes, no one has forgotten about the draft.  G-man is not done, and I am still convinced that we are going to bring in at least a couple of more receivers (via draft or FA) to winnow out the wheat from the chaff.

I will give G-man and RIvera this: even at this moment, we may get some improvement just with the better hands alone. Of course, as always, a lot depends on the play calling.

In explaining how the Panthers would try to replace leading receiver Steve Smith, coach Ron Rivera said the Panthers wouldn't necessarily try to find a No. 1 receiver.

Instead, they would look to replace the 10 catches a game their four wide receivers -- all of whom are now gone -- combined for in 2013.

With the acquisition of free agent wideout Jason Avant on Monday, the Panthers are getting closer to Rivera's goal of 10. But they're not there, yet.

Avant and the two other recently signed wideouts -- Jerricho Cotchery and Tiquan Underwood -- combined for 7.25 receptions a game last season.

But without a true No. 1 receiver -- like Avant had in Philly in DeSean Jackson, Cotchery had in Antonio Brown, and Underwood had in Vincent Jackson -- one of those receivers is going to draw extra coverage.

The bottom line, the Panthers have brought in a proven group of complementary receivers, all of whom are said to be high-character guys who will help in the locker room and with the development of the young wideouts.

On statistics alone, it's hard to argue that Cotchery-Avant-Underwood is a better receiving lineup than Smith-Brandon LaFell-Ted Ginn Jr.

Check out the short article, Huddlers.

Person and Jones have put forth a very astute analysis and summation of the state of our receiving corps at the present moment, in my estimation.

I don't hate on Person, Jones or any of them.  Like I said in the other thread, it's not about breaking news in the world of Twitter, it's about saying something interesting or giving a different angle on news that has already broken.  I mean we're all reading pretty much the same crap and regurgitating the same core news anyway. Just be accurate and a little different.

I also don't mind writers getting ideas from the Internet---whether Twitter or not.  As writers, you have to get ideas from somewhere.  If someone else has some work out there, just give them their proper attribution and it's all good, but you don't get credit for tweeting an idea.

teams may feel they dont need to have an extra guy double up on any wr and use that guy to spy Cam or just commit to the run.  we will see that safety in the box a lot.  did it really take two guys to come up with this info?

Gettleman ain't gonna let it go down like that. We will draft some play makers on offense.

Gman and Rivera aren't trying to replace last year's WR nor are they looking for long term WR options from free agency.  They are trying to build a team from the draft, and fill in the gaps with cheap, replaceable parts from free agency.  That's what they are going to do year in and year out.  We'll be running lean for the first couple of seasons in this process, while we ride out crappy old contracts and have relatively high turnover rate.  Once we have a solid foundation complete, however, it's a matter of reloading with BPA every year and using free agency for depth.  That's how you build a dynasty, and that's exactly what they are doing.  You take a little pain the short term, if you can call 12-4 and division champions pain, but once you have the machine built it's just a matter of keeping it fueled.

This is why draft pundits saying we will take player x or y are full of crap.  We aren't drafting for need, we are drafting to building a strong foundation of the best players we can get.  We won't reach for a WR, because we don't need to reach for a WR.  We will take whoever is tops on our board when it comes to us, every time it comes to us.  It's exciting to see it happening, because we have a very, very bright future ahead of us.

this post here from this morning made the same point more concisely:

I guess between the 3 of them and Olsen, we can get our 12 catches a game, after all that's all they talked about when they cut Smitty. Gettleman: "Dont worry Panthers fans, all we need is 12 catches per game"

We still need to spend at least a 2nd Round pick on a WR.

I Don't Care what Gman says!!

We want to keep Cam long-term? Well give the man some weapons!

no we don't.  Want to keep Cam around?  Win.  Build a dynasty and win.  Make him believe that by staying here he will get rings.  Gman knows what the fug he's doing.  Finally, we have someone in our FO who knows what the fug they are doing.

To keep Cam around we first have to keep him upright. All the talk about WR's, people forget the OL.

    • And he still has one more win and a $110M contract, go figure?
    • People looking at the offense negatively need to step back a minute and remember that expectations were mighty low this year. We have a lot of young guys and rookies. And our qb is a newby in the system he is in with a new coach who has never been a head coach and signal caller combined.  This is a work in progress so only an approach which recognizes incremental improvement is valid for best measuring where we are versus  demanding immediate success after a 2-15 campaign last year.
