Wide Receiver Roundup

Or...you might want to prepare yourself for an OT like CK or Moses being the #28 pick.  There is a REAL possibility that this happens.

Hey, you need to protect Cam.  If you can solve another problem in round one, that's good business.

This is the deepest WR draft in forever, so you can definitely wait on the position as long as you are willing to draft a few of them over the course of the draft.

Here is a breakdown of the Panthers WR from last year vs what they will have this coming season. 2013 production comparison & future cap hit comparisons. The cap hit for Smith is not what he's making in Baltimore, rather what he would've been owed by Carolina if he was not released. Rookie figures are the averages of WRs drafted in the bottom 3rd of rounds 1-3 last year (Hopkins, Patterson, Dobson, Bailey), where Carolina will most likely pick up a WR this year.

2013 production-

old guys- 156 Rec, 1982 Yd, 15 TD

new guys- 146 Rec, 2001 Yd, 19 TD

2014 salary cap hit-

old- $12.1mil

new- $7.6mil (includes $3mil owed to Smith)

total committed to 2015 & 2016-

old- $35mil

new- $11.7mil

Smith- 64 Rec, 744 Yd, 4 TD

Rookie- 38 Rec, 505 Yd, 3 TD

Smith- '14 $6 mil, '15 $9mil, '16 $11mil

Rookie- '14 $970k (+ $3mil), '15 $1.2mil, '16 $1.5mil

LaFell- 49 Rec, 627 Yd, 5 TD

Cotchery- 46 Rec, 609 Yd, 10 TD

LaFell- '14 $2mil, '15 $3.2mil, '16 3.8mil

Cotchery- '14 $1.7mil, '15 $1.9mil

Ginn Jr- 36 Rec, 556 Yd, 5 TD

Avant- 38 Rec, 447 Yd, 2 TD

Ginn Jr- '14 $2.2mil, '15 $4mil, '16 $4mil

Avant- '14 $1mil

Hixon- 7 Rec, 55 Yd, 1 TD

Underwood- 24 Rec, 440 Yd, 4 TD

Hixon- '14 $924k

Underwood- '14 $925k, '15 $1.1mil

GM Dave Gettleman- 1

Huddle armchair GMs- 0

This! Pretty clear DG was making the right moves all along...but people like Ace...nevermind. The closeminded people on this site can't see it and refuse to acknowledge it.

What you want and what's going to happen is 2 different things. You might want to prepare yourself for Bell being the LT this season. Unless 1 of the top 4 drop the other OT aren't going to be ready to play LT from day one. Anybody we draft after the top 4 will play RT for at least a season. Gross was a top 10 pick and didn't start on the left side. It might be scary to think of Bell on the left side. But it's scarier to think of a 5th rated rookie OT starting at LT

I really don't think so.  I would rather have James Hurst starting over Byron Bell on the left side.  Did you watch him this year?  He is absolutely awful.

There is also a real possibility a WR rated hire then a RT. Will be the BPA at 28th.

They are not going to put a rookie on Cam's blind side. Unless it's 1 of the top 4. They are already talking Bell up at LT. It's not a smoke screen. They wanted Collins he signed with the Bucs. Unless a team cuts a vet June 1st or we sign Brian McKinney. Bell will get the job.

Do you have insider sources or something?  How do you KNOW they are going to take a receiver?

I don't know if they will or won't. I'm just going on the best player available philosophy.

There are more 1st round rated WR'S then OT and CB. So playing the numbers a higher rated WR will fall to us before a OT or CB.

I 100% agree.

I am preparing myself for the fact that the pick could be a WR, OL, or CB.  Have no idea which way we go or where the BPA will fall.

competition.

the only one that has somewhat of a "safe" seat is clowney. the others could be cut with a tiny hit to the cap. i take it avant has a 65,000 signing bonus and underwood is 300,000, thats not in the safe zone. ive already stated avant could be cut then brought back after week 1, so his contract isnt guaranteed. using his mentor skills for the young WRs during TC.

i believe panthers will carry 6 WRs(just like past yr). early draft pick, clowney, avant(after cut), king, mcnutt, and underwood/other. the undrafted pool should have better than past years pickins too, just a great WR class.

Cam is coming off ankle surgery and won't be available for OTA's and will have fewer snaps in camp and possibly preseason.

Enter Joe Webb....

Under estimating Webb.

What if DG's BPA is a LB or a DE?

I hope people understand BPA philosophy works with the idea of positions of need. Most team need more then 1 position. That's what parity is. So BPA for us is out of our 3 main need positions Wr's CB and OT. Imo a Wr rated highly will fall to us before Cb or OT.

Remember that Davis is getting older and we very well could either cut CJ after this season or not get Hardy signed long term.

As such, lb and de is not really that far fetched if a stud falls there.
