Panthers Sign Avant to 1 Year Deal

Recommended Posts

At the end of the day, every man is responsible for himself.

That's what I just said. My point was the help would've given an extra boost. You can throw an intern to the wolves and say "every man is responsible for himself" and watch him fail. Or you can throw him into a work place where he knows he can get the help he needs and has a higher probability of succeeding than just being thrown to the wolves. If he succeeds, great. If not, then he's not the employee you need. In the end he's still "responsible for himself". Acting like the environment doesn't help or destroy a person is being naïve.

I don't know how to feel about this. Beggars can't be choosers, but still. Why not wait until after the draft?

Because Gettlemen has said from the start, and I love it, that he wants to go into the draft without "need" positions.  That way they can draft the BPA.  We will obviously draft a receiver but we don't have to draft one in the first round now.

Yea protecting Cam's blindside is more dire atm I believe.

@PFF: Most rec yards from the slot over the last 3 years: 1.Welker(2935) 2.Cruz(2636) 3.Colston(1692) 4.New Panther Jason Avant(1669) 5.Cobb(1530)

With Olsen and Avant I suspect our third down efficiency in the passing game should get better.

If it gets any better it'll be some kind of record. We were pretty good on 3rd downs already. I would really like to get better on 1st and 2nd.

Solid signing in my opinion, nothing more and nothing less. Avant is a pretty reliable WR and i dont expect him to get bug numbers or make the horrid drops we saw last season from guys like Lafell. Hopefully Rivera drafts another one either in the 1st or 2nd rd of the draft

So do we still double dip or nah...

In my opinion a group of the following would be fun to watch...

1. Cooks, Avant

2. Cotchery, Latimer, King

Slot: Underwood

the goal is to acquire enough talent so we don't have to field players like Underwood. Avant is a number 3. Let him fulfill that role and hope for the best in the draft.

Problem is this isn't some intern at some shitty company making shitty money. These are athletes, being paid very well, with numerous professional coaches who have been around the league for quite a long time with them there when they need them. There are also many many more players on the team, some of which have also been around the league for quite some time. Let's be real here. These players either want the money and the bright lights, or they want the game and to cement their place in it's history.

We sure don't have a sexy wide-out group but its already better than last year's.

Underwood has more upside than Ginn and hopefully doesn't have drop issues.

Cotchery is significantly better than LaFell in every aspect (except MAYBE blocking).

Avant is certainly no Steve Smith, but when you consider how quickly Smiths skills are deteriorating and how much we'll have to pay him over the next few years he isn't much of a downgrade.

This FA has turned out surprisingly well and sets us up to go BPA in the draft.  Honestly if we keep hitting home runs on our first pick and getting a few nice additions in the later round we will have some nice trade bait if nothing else down the line.

Just because you have bodies at a position doesnt mean you don't have a need. If any one thinks we can compete with this current crop of receivers, you are sadly, hilariously, mistaken.
