Panthers Sign Avant to 1 Year Deal

Recommended Posts

I don't mind the signing, he's solid veteran depth. What I don't like are the implications. We're apparently very high on Pilares, McNutt, and King, then bring in three other guys (all solid signings, don't get me wrong) when we typically only keep receivers.

Sure they could always be cut, but that seems counter-productive when they're selling "veteran leadership."

This notion that Steve Smith was because some of the receivers we drafted didn't work out is ludicrous.

Considering players like Drew Carter, Keary Colbert, and Dwayne Jarrett pretty much fizzled out of the league entirely shortly there after that should tell you all that you need to know. But no, apparently that blame falls on another player, not those individuals themselves.

Either these guys want it or they don't, that's all there is to it.

I never mentioned previous Panther WRs that didn't work out and I never said Smith was a reason they didn't work out. I simply said he was never really one to go out of his way to help others along in their development and that is okay with me because he did this thing on the field every Sunday.

Those saying "ohh no another #3/#4 WR signing. This is terrible" are dumbasses. You want to go into the season with Pilares, McNutt, and King as the 3 and 4? No? Then STFU. Our only choice is to make the team we have right now better and we just did with this signing.

But, but but...  McKing and Nutt just needed a chance.  I mean they did not have a lot of practice time, they were added to the roster late and I even think one of them had a parakeet that died.  Come on man.  These guys are set to break out any day now

Dude duh but acting like mentoring doesn't help isn't realistic. Smitty got help from proehl and moose. He's talked about it at great lengths

That is really not at all what was said. Smith rarely helped out our young receivers at all when it would've been beneficial to the team if he did. Everyone is ultimately responsible for themselves, but that kind of help would've gone a long way for them.

For example, I didn't know absolute poo about my current job. I had to learn from the bottom up. Yeah I did it, but I had great help from our Senior Tech who put me on the fast track to learn better.

It would've been great for Smith to give that extra boost to them, but he chose not to most of the time. Now we have an environment that is rookie friendly for a WR to come in and get on the fast track to learning our offense and getting in synch with Cam. Steve wouldn't have provided that.

Not necessarily saying you said that, but assumed it was possibly being implied, as I've seen the argument tossed about before. We've had a run of bad luck with the position, we all know that. Much of it was simply poor drafting on the part of our previous GM, and it's up to Gettleman and our coaching staff to change that. This is all I'm saying. Yes I'm glad Cotchery, and Avant are good guys, but at the end of the day they have a job to do like any other player on the roster. All these guys should be stepping up, as one team. At the end of the day, we have coaches who are paid to coach.

What implications?  That we will bring in a bunch of cheap guys and try to find a few gems?  That because we keep Avant, Cotchery and Underwood that we will not be able to keep Pilares, McNutt or King? Or we won't draft a receiver now?

Cotchery and Avant are veterans on short term contracts.  There is no guarantee they will be here but if they aren't we lose very little money.  Plus who says we don't have the inevitable injuries and lose one of two guys in the process.  Exactly how much has Pilares missed due to injuries in the past 2 years.  I would rather bring in a bunch of guys and let the chips fall where they may.  If King or McNutt are good enough to play then they will make the roster.  But if they aren't, they go to the practice squad or get cut.  We need the best team we can build and nobody should be safe from the Turk.
