Panthers Sign Avant to 1 Year Deal

Recommended Posts

Looking at some plays from last year, it seems like Avant helped to skew Fole's numbers alot. Some horrible passes by Fole that Avant magically brings down. If those three guys don't get cut, expect Pilares, King, or Mcnutt to be gone. A team doesn't keep 7-8 receivers on their main squad.

I expect that McNutt and King are going to get their chance to compete just like everyone else, but I've told people a few times now that our WR corps may look very different than what we think it's going to look like.  The only sure thing I believe that we can count on right now is Jerricho Cotchery.

Why bring in 2 veteran WR if you plan to draft 1 or 2. Apparently people who say this shaven't been paying attention to anything Gettleman has been saying. He has said along he will fill in holes where ever he can in free agency so we can go BPA in the draft.  So this is him doing exactly what he said he would do.  The vets are here to help develop the young guys who will be here for the next 5-10 years.

If we are being honest Steve Smith really didn't mentor young guys over the course of his tenure here. 89 did him and that's okay. I have to think both Avant and Cotchery will be more useful that 89 would have been in that regard. Both are sure handed veterans and both touted as great locked room guys. Those are things every young QB and every young receiving corps needs.

Can we please get off this already.

It's not any of our receivers jobs to hold hands. We have coaches.

This is one of the reasons why it was time to move on.

Probably because they aren't totally sold on King nor McNutt and bringing in both Avant and Cotchery allows us to have a bigger veteran presence in the locker room at the position while allowing us to have two sure-handed vets on the field when we need them most. Even with a highly drafted WR the position is going to be by committee at least for this season. A highly selected rookie plus Avant, Cotchery, and Olsen is solid and at least reliable week in and week out.

we shall see. that might also be why when the WR corp was struggling last year at the end of the season, they only brought up McNutt and he only played a hand full of snaps. Avant has been nothing more then a #3 guy, and 8 years in his career that is all he will be.

i just see the set back of pushing back the WR need for a another year.

You're right, it isn't their jobs to coach young guys and that is what coaches are for. But having a couple guys that will willingly help out in the development of our receivers and offer insight as respected seasoned veterans isn't a bad thing either.

Get off what dude?

It's a major positive for older vets to mentor. Who do you think mentored smitty? Who does he always talk about helping him out so much?

This notion that Steve Smith was because some of the receivers we drafted didn't work out is ludicrous.

Considering players like Drew Carter, Keary Colbert, and Dwayne Jarrett pretty much fizzled out of the league entirely shortly there after that should tell you all that you need to know. But no, apparently that blame falls on another player, not those individuals themselves.

Either these guys want it or they don't, that's all there is to it.
