Panthers Sign Avant to 1 Year Deal

Recommended Posts

yeah we didn't lose a #1 in Smitty but we've def up to this point put in place 3 other guys who aren't even as good as him @ 35. Then we'll bring in a rookie who surely won't get it right away. & yes our O-Line which wasnt that great last season has gotten even worse w/ the loss of Gross so I have all the reason in the world to be confident....NOT!

Cotchery def outperformed smitty last year. Avant is a huge upgrade over lafell. Underwood is on par with ginn but has more upside. Idk why ur worried about rookies, our fo has proven the last few years we'll get day 1 starters out of the draft and udfas.

Also I dont understand an earlier post saying we had the tools to win in cams first year. We had no depth along with bottom feeder special teams and defense. Sure Rons coaching style change helped us out, but the roster we currently have is significantly better than what we had in 2011.

God I hope Gettelmen isn't thinking like this. You know only Cotchery (2 year) got more then a 1 year deal?

So it doesn't seem like he's vested in these guys.

If you don't know, Gettleman believes in war in the trenches. He double dipped in two starting defensive tackles and used a patchwork secondary and it worked. The thing is, even in the third round, there is still a lot of WR talent (all depending on how things play out on draft day). Smitty came from late rounds. We were sufficient enough last year with patchwork WR. If we can solidfy are line for years, and have a project at WR for future #1 capabilities, I see no problem with this. It's all going to come down to the cards on draft day. Maybe a WR will be higher on his board than the OT's available. Do we trade back? Doubtful. Do we go best TE in the draft? That's def a possibility.

I'll tell you what, if we have two viable TE like Cam had in 2011, it will open things up for these patchwork WR we have. The elite teams will have a great player to cover Olsen, but imagine covering Olsen and Ebron that will probably be sitting there at 28? Jesus I'm excited.

ummmmm

this is a pretty difficult task... almost impossible if not picking top 15.

Normally I would agree with you Jeremy.  But with the depth at WR in this draft class, I think the odds of finding a very good WR in the first three rounds is pretty good.

With the solid (not spectacular) WR corps that we are putting together, we really won't need a guy to come in and deliver like AJ Green did as a rookie to have a solid passing game.  The offense that we are going to run is not built around that.

What we need is a group of guys that compliment each other and make plays.  I think a 1-3 round WR added to the veterans and young guys already on the roster can deliver that.

Will they?  Gotta wait and see.

He did that after signing Cole Gaydosh and D Edwards to FA deals.

My opinion is Gettelmen takes what the draft gives him.

Last year drafts was deep in DT's and 2 dropped in his lap as BPA. This year WR'S is the position that is deep and BPA could be WR in most of the 1st 4 rounds.

I think he knew this draft was deep in WR'S and since ours weren't producing. He felt like this was the best time to make the overhaul at the position. So he signed a couple older pro's to smaller deals to help the transition to the younger players he will draft this year.

That's just my opinion.

Exactly.....we had 5 rookies starting at times on last year's defense.

Our quarterback is surrounded by tons of talent, its just on the other side of the ball. 11 of the last 15 superbowl winners had elite front 7's.

You should be thankful we are worried about receivers and not a quarterback. We could have been stuck with a guy like Stafford, Ryan or Dalton who are completely ineffective without their top targets.

You're missing the point. It's about maximizing your investment. Within the next two years Cam Newton will be the highest paid player on the Carolina Panthers. If you want to win with defense and running the ball while having your qb only throw when needed then go get a Trent Dilfer. I'm not against that philosophy, it can and has worked in the NFL. But the biggest mistake you can make is to have a talent like Cam Newton, pay him 100 million dollars, and stop him before opposing defenses ever get a chance.

what is in bold, is what i am hoping for. this year WR is by far the deepest position so hopefully one does fall to use in the first 2 rounds. just like next years draft should be deep with OT prospects. now that doesnt mean you pass on a OT this year, in hopes to getting a guy next year, but WR is deep.
