Panthers Sign Avant to 1 Year Deal

Recommended Posts

They could drop Pilares, McNutt or King in a millisecond and wouldnt have to do it untill final cuts.

You're right, just a concern of mine since every indication is that we're "very high" on our younger trio

The whole point of free agency is to take care of needs so Gettleman can pick BPA which is the best way to make the team talent better.

Kinda odd he hasn't brought in any OL guys then, which is the more pressing concern at this point.

Gettlemen haters--he is doing this with coins in his pocket and without mortgaging the future.

What are the needs again?   FS, LT, and #1 WR (along with depth at OLB, CB, and T)?

Isn't that considered to be in good shape heading into a draft that is deep at T and WR?

it is, but to play devils advocate, why not bring in an OT via FA as well? if several top ranked players slide to 28, and panthes select Moses, do you think that is truly the bpa? just asking questions, because im not a hater of DG, or fan yet.

we will not know because teams dont publish their big boards besides the dumbass cowboys.

Why bring in 2 veteran WR if you plan to draft 1 or 2. Apparently people who say this shaven't been paying attention to anything Gettleman has been saying. He has said along he will fill in holes where ever he can in free agency so we can go BPA in the draft.  So this is him doing exactly what he said he would do.  The vets are here to help develop the young guys who will be here for the next 5-10 years.

Because it's all about competition.  I believe Gettleman is going to take the BPA regardless if it's a WR or not.  I don't think that any WR we've signed this offseason---never mind the fact that Cotchery and Avant are the same type of WR---will preclude us from taking Marquise Lee (for example) if he is there at 28.  Taylor Lewan might, but Cotchery, Avant or Underwoord will not.

thats my thing too, OL was an issue, but yet 0 where brought in. we did loose out on Collins, but their were no other rumors about OL being brought in on visits.

Getts will bring in FA to fill holes where and when he can. He has assembled a rag tag receiver corps that if we had to we could go into the season with it. Getts also appears to be comfortable with his oline stable. We may not be, but he is and that's something isn't it?

Anyway, the point of all of what I just said was to say this, we have filled our holes with guys that can contribute. We have no glaring needs that doesn't have a body that can play the position if the season started tomorrow.

This is what will allow the Panthers to draft BPA. Do not be surprised if BPA at 28 is defense or something other than WR/OL.

See that's an opinion I can respect, what I don't like is when people thinks this takes WR off the need list. I had that fear last year after we signed Hixon and Ginn, and sure enough we didn't draft a WR.

who is saying that WR is no longer a need? that might be an assumption you are making by people not freaking out over the state of the WR corps.

we are rebuilding the WR corps from scratch, mainly because what we had was essentially crap. what we are doing is outting theframework in place for a good up and coming WR to be built and what cotchery and avant bring is 1) much needed reliability and 2) solid vet presence and mentors for a very young WR that will/should see it's main components brought in this year. look at the temperment of these two guys and compare them to smitty. take away the attitude on the field and even then, whobdo you think would be better for building and mentoring? smitty has gotten better, but he was still lacking and that was never one of his strong suits. from what i can see, cotchery and avant are both pretty selfless role players and i think that is crucial for helping a young group of players grow into their roles.

like i said, these are reliable options for a young QB on the field and solid leaders for the young WRs. if you need to see comparisons as far as roles, look at cotchery as a moose type player and avant as proehl. no, they aren't perfect comparisons and i'm sure people will point out the differences, but the point is this. whoever we bring in will have solid pros to learn from that will help them grow like moose and proehl helped smith.

i just want the same approach taken for WR to be taken for OT (or at least bring in some competition instead of waiting for the draft).that way you, can really take bpa and be comfortable with your roster.

but i also felt like bringing in Cole and resigning Dwon would lead to the panthers not taking a DT early, so hopefully im wrong again and a top ranked OT or WR will slide down the board.

I wish I could answer that question, DaCity, but it has me stumped.  They tried to get Collins, but after that they sorta quit looking.  Maybe they felt that the roster and/or the draft has better talent than what was out there.   They seem to be acting like they know something nobody else knows.

No, I am not a fan of Morgan Moses in the first round.  I honestly think a good WR will drop to us--Marqise Lee maybe?

The OT will probably be a second rounder, in my opinion.  Billy Turner, Joe Bitonio, James Hurst, Jack Mewhort, etc.  Part of me wonders if they have checked out Cyrus or Tiny's knees and we will take a chance.  Frank Alexander, Star Lotulelei, now Cyrus in the second--we have a pretty good knee doctor here.  Heck, Gettlemen may feel a second round pick for a player with 4 years on his hoof is worth it--does not have to give him a big second contract (not sure I believe that).

If he can sign DeCoud, the secondary will become a veteran group playing smart behind that front 7.  I like the additions there.  They are solid players.
