Panthers Sign Avant to 1 Year Deal

Recommended Posts

Except we already had Steve Smith, Brandon Lafell, Armanti king of training camp Edwards, David Gettis, Pilares, Joe Adams, and a Pro Bowl LT. And remember half of those guys didn't even make the team.

And? That's still just reflecting what you would do. Gettleman's not changing his strategy. He already promised us that he's stick with BPA.

I'm not sure whether I should be excited about Avant and Cotchery or not. I was hoping that we'd get a top WR in the draft with our 1st pick, if there's one left of course. Now I get the feeling

that we will go OL, maybe even double dip. But I can see a picture developing and to me, it

seems as though it will be contingent on our

running game. Which brings me back to the OL. Gettleman seems to know what he's doing, but I'll never agree with cutting Smith...

Pretty much. Or instead of 2 we only take 1. Or instead of grabbing a better talent early we decide to wait a few rounds.

In a vacuum it's a nice signing, and veterans are of course important to have around, I just hope it doesn't mean we pass on a young, high potential player or two.

It's probably less an implication and more my own inference, since we normally keep six WRs and I doubt we'd cut any of these three.

The whole point of free agency is to take care of needs so Gettleman can pick BPA which is the best way to make the team talent better.  Still I can't imagine that we won't take a WR in the first 3 rounds unless we take a TE instead and a wide receiver later.  Still these vets signed so cheaply that we really don't have to keep them around for fear we will lose much.  As for keeping only 6 guys, don't be surprised if one of the draftees or new guys ends up with a mystery injury and goes on IR.  Particularly when at least 1 guy can come back during the season.

Gettlemen haters--he is doing this with coins in his pocket and without mortgaging the future.

What are the needs again?   FS, LT, and #1 WR (along with depth at OLB, CB, and T)?

Isn't that considered to be in good shape heading into a draft that is deep at T and WR?

We have players plenty capable of being consistent 1k yard rushers, we don't have an oline for them to run behind.

Get luck all the weapons you want, he ain't getting farther than his freebie divisional title if he doesn't stop throwing atrocious picks in the playoffs.

RG3 has brought the Redskins to a worse record than when they actually drafted him. No defense on that team either.

Andy Dalton should not be on this list, he isn't consistent and has almost no upside. If it weren't for his weapons he'd be universally regarded as a complete bust.

Wilson and CK were fortunate to be drafted to previously established teams with dominant defenses and weapons already in place.

Cam got drafted to the worst offense of the modern NFL era who had a GM throwing superstar contracts out to good players. If you want every position addressed immediately build a time machine and get Hurney canned before the lockout. I wish you the best of interceptions.

The list wasn't about the qbs, but their organizations investing in them by surrounding them with talent to maximize their potential

You're right, it isn't their jobs to coach young guys and that is what coaches are for. But having a couple guys that will willingly help out in the development of our receivers and offer insight as respected seasoned veterans isn't a bad thing either.

Just like Smitty said his game improved years ago when the Panthers first signed Proehl and Proehl helped mentor him while Proehl was still an active WR .

I will have to see that to believe that. But why else do you sign TWO veteran WR's. Guys who have been tagged as good locker room guys and leaders. If the end plan is to draft 2 WR's high then I love these signings. If these signings make DG hold off another year to draft a WR or two I hate them.

I've been quiet lately, I want to see what happens at the draft, then ill form my opinion.

BPA is BPA is BPA.

Gettleman is going to draft based on who is still available when we pick, and where they rate on his big boatd.

There us no receiver conspiracy.

Our quarterback is surrounded by tons of talent, its just on the other side of the ball.  11 of the last 15 superbowl winners had elite front 7's.

You should be thankful we are worried about receivers and not a quarterback.  We could have been stuck with a guy like Stafford, Ryan or Dalton who are completely ineffective without their top targets.

Gettleman pretty much knew we weren't finding a future #1 in FA, so we signed some solid guys for cheap.

Hoping this means we're more inclined to get a guy with big play potential in the draft now.
