Panthers Sign Avant to 1 Year Deal

Recommended Posts

I promised myself I was going to sit back and not comment. But I can't help it. You guys are like the damn little aliens from Toy Story and Gettleman is the claw. Our WRs right now are not better than last year, not even a smidge. Steve Smith is a border line Hall of Famer, Lafell is better than Avant, drops and all and Underwood ain't Ginn. I don't mind all the blind optimism, but come on man can we at least be honest with ourselves??

Can you just like remind us how much you want a receiver and how much you hate Gettleman on like a monthly basis?  It's getting tiring to read the same post every day in every thread.

Steve Smith isn't playing like a HoFer anymore, get over it.  He's old, he had little competition over the ball last year, made costly drops and had the production of ur average third stringer.  LaFell is plain awful, how you can't see that is baffling.  Ginn was considered across the league a complete bust until our sexy quarterback was able to milk some level of production out of him.

Because Gettleman's offseason strategy is to patch up positional needs the best he can with FA's, which sets you up to pick the BPA in the draft. It's the same strategy he used last year.

Except we already had Steve Smith, Brandon Lafell, Armanti king of training camp Edwards, David Gettis, Pilares, Joe Adams, and a Pro Bowl LT. And remember half of those guys didn't even make the team.

13 Tds in 4 years

12 Tds in 8 years

Okay? Our goal offensively is to keep the defense off the field by sustaining drives. LaFell killed drives with his drops or even caused INTs (Niners game.) In case you haven't heard Avant barely has any drops and is as consistent as receiver as there is and will greatly help in sustaining drives and keep the defense rested. But I'm sure you wouldn't care about that since according to you stats mean everything, right?

See you guys get confused and your panties get into a bunch. Nobody is attacking the signing. I'm attacking the notion that the WR group right now is better than last year. If you believe that nonsense then I guess we won't be drafting a WR because we sure as hell didn't draft one last year.

Post really wasn't targeted at you...

I think our depth has upgraded on paper to last season's corps but the team still lacks that #1 guy.

And about last year, I'm sure if we had our 3rd, Allen would be our pick. The 3rd last year, Dallas chose Williams and SD took Allen 2 picks later.

I thought last year's corps were pretty good, even though Lafell's drops made them worse. The receiving numbers were just a factor of a time of possession offense. We can't fairly judge this group (better or worse) until we see them play together.

You are exact and spot on. However, you are wasting your time trying to convince someone like assboogie, a poster that always has blinders on his eyes. :)

don't read it then! Lafell was better than Avant so this is not a reall exciting or even encouraging move.

Can we at least wait until after we've had the draft to start trashing the receivers who are gone? I'm trying to be optimistic as well, and I'm fine with the signings, but none of these guys have played any meaningful time with our QB yet. It's still April.

Just because you have bodies at a position doesnt mean you don't have a need. If any one thinks we can compete with this current crop of receivers, you are sadly, hilariously, mistaken.

Yeah but we don' HAVE to draft someone in the first...we can take the best player available instead of having to take someone.  It's not to say it's not a need but that he doesn't want to let the roster dictate the draft.

I love Avant and have since his days at Michigan. But to think he makes our WR corp solidified is a bit of a stretch. However, he'll make the tough 3rd down catches over the middle that LaFell only dreamed of doing.

In the end we still need to draft 1-2 guys in May but I like the signing and think it makes our team better.

Can't believe people still find ways to complain about this signing. Sigh.

We've got a lot of reverse homers on the board wight now.

We didn't sign him: "What?  We needed him! We'll suck without him!  Fug Gettleman!"

We signed him:  "What?  He's a scrub!  We had better players last year!  Fug Gettleman!"

We don't HAVE to draft anything in the first. We could draft an MLB for all you know. Hell, we may even trade out of the first.

I'm sorry but I'm glad(well not sad/disappointed is better phrasing) that LaFell's gone. While I won't trash him because he had some good moments/big catches while he was here, I feel a lot better knowing the team has gotten proven vets who rarely drops passes in critical situations over LaFell.
