Olsen, our best tight end, our fabled true number one receiver last year. Olsen had slightly more yards (71), but played all 16 games. Olsen also managed a grand total of six touchdowns. I don't think his life will be easier next season when he's doubled on every down.

In 2011 he played on a 2-14 team with a gutted roster, disgruntled lame duck coach, & rookie QB who was thrown to the wolves.

This year he was the primary target on a 12-4 division champion team with a Pro Bowl QB.

We should have let Hardy walk, and kept our best receiver, and signed a better one this off-season. We can cut many players and look beyond this year on how it affects our cap situation.

 

I assume you are referring to total yards. Judging solely by that criteria favors passing teams over ball control offenses. But passing for a bunch of yards doesn't necessarily lead to wins, see the Browns and Lions for prime examples. The Panthers were a ball control running team. We ranked 30th in pass attempts.

 

Ranking 5th in drive success rate is a truer depiction of how effective our O was. Judging solely on yards lacks context, how many drives did we have? were we playing behind or with a lead?. Note that teams like Seattle and SF were very similar to us in passing yards v rush yards and wins.

 

We can only cut a certain amount of players without it negatively affecting our cap. They chose to eat a little for Smitty today for bigger relief next year.

 

Letting Hardy walk would have been the mistake. Look what teams are paying for premium pass rushers. Pass rushers are probably the second most valuable piece in building teams to combat the #1 piece of other teams, QB's. Hardy is hitting his prime and what makes him even rarer is his ability against the run compared to other pass rushers.

 

Keeping Hardy has led to us to making some tough decisions, I'll grant you that but keeping Hardy was the right move IMO.

Everything I am reading says he is a great locker room leader, route runner, and has very good hands. He simply lacks speed. He looks to have averaged about 600 yards a season for the past 5 years. I'll take a guy like that to be a 3/4 receiver for sure. Plus he can play special teams.

anybody knocking smith's production last year i won't even grace with a response.........because it's a tired discussion, numerous factors played into that, that a regular run of the mill football fan should see

 

 

but on a different note can avant played our 1 spot, we have jericho at the 3 and tiquan most likely will come in and play ginns role...........if we draft a rookie i highly doubt he would take over the 1 spot from day one.............idk ish is confusing fug it
