No, but if you add that they'd be pretty much identical,

Difference is we're saving an insane amount of money that would've been owed to Smith the following two years if he were kept.

Gettleman did the right thing.

 

That remains to be seen. It's still April guys, remember.

That's a big gap, and I don't think it will grow smaller next season. We don't have any downfield threats to let our current receivers do work (their part) as career number threes (and fours).

Underwoods yard per catch was one of the highest in the league last year.

Olsen, our best tight end, our fabled true number one receiver last year. Olsen had slightly more yards (71), but played all 16 games. Olsen also managed a grand total of six touchdowns. I don't think his life will be easier next season when he's doubled on every down.

no team is going to double Olsen...come on man

Functionally we had an offense that was one of the worst in the league, and in my opinion is was form the person calling the plays, not the players. We basically had a MIA number three receiver until Ginn last year, and still manage to take giant steps backwards. I personally think Smith was still a great receiver last season, despite his numbers and injury. I also think he would have been a asset if actually moved to role that didn't involve carrying our passing offense on his back.

 

The guys we signed weren't signed by anyone else for a reason. Our players we let walk were signed immediately by good (possibly contender) teams for a reason, whether you can see it or not. I don't think you can dispute the Patriots or Baltimore know how to win. Paying Smith to leave doesn't help our cap. Overpaying players doesn't help our cap. Creating holes in our roster doesn't help our chances to win.

 

Also, we didn't do pretty well. Our passing attack was the worst I've seen in years. It's the sole reason we didn't progress in the playoffs. Our 12-4 record (that some are now disputing, because it helps there arguments) was from our defense, and Cam Newton making the offense work, somehow, someway.

 

Functionally our offense was ranked:

 

11th in yards per drive

10th in points per drive

7th in turnovers per drive

16th in interceptions per drive

3rd in fumbles per drive

3rd in plays per drive

2nd in TOP

5th in drive success rate

9th in TD's per drive

13th in FG's per drive

17th in punts per drive

12th on 3 and outs per drive

8th in TD's in the redzone

5th in average lead

 

Will people please stop saying our O was one of the worst in the league and educated themselves.

 

Avant has a career catch percentage of almost 65%. I think we're better off having a guy like that than not. Smittys is about 58% for a frame of reference.

 

Cutting Smitty saves us  about 10 mill in cap space for 2015 and 2016 apiece. You have to look beyond this year to make sense of the cut.

 

In the playoffs our #2 ranked D disappeared midway through the 2nd quarter. They continually capitulated by being over aggressive.

Yes he managed to break a few long balls off. However if you read some of the talk from Tampa fans you'll know that a lot of them see him as a project number three or a solid fourth, fifth receiver. My friend that loves that god forsaken team actually told me he would rather have a new fifth or six round receiver on the team than keep trying with Underwood.

Smith was mediocre at best this season at age 34. He also damaged the pcl in his knee.

Did you want to keep him at a 9mil cap hit in '15 & 11mil cap hit in '16 at age 36-37?

Dave cutting Smith shouldn't have came at a shock. Keeping him would've been stupid.

 

That remains to be seen. He had a down season, did you want to cut him after 2011 as well?

What was our overall offense ranked again, and our passing offense?

 

We should have let Hardy walk, and kept our best receiver, and signed a better one this off-season. We can cut many players and look beyond this year on how it affects our cap situation.
