Ricky Proehl and Don Gregory having dinner with WR Lattimer

Since when is latimer considered a guy "likely" to go in the first or early second? I've read probably hundreds of mock drafts and done at least 50 myself. I don't remember ever seeing him go before out second pick. I like him as much as the next guy but to say he (almost definitely) won't be there by our second pick is silly and uninformed. There will be better value available in the first. This board goes through the same rigamoral every few weeks about its latest favorite draftee. Until this dinner meeting it was widely assumed that he would be a 3rd round target. I can tell you that he is being projected to go later than that, though sounds like a riser so I doubt he would drop much more than that. I don't think id be angry with him in the first but geez.

I have been a bit of a WR slut this year.  Started off wanting Beckham, then I single-handedly discovered Moncrief and felt he would be a third round steal, then I went to Matthews.  Still like these guys, but Lattimer is the kid I cannot get out of my mind.  Think I will send him flowers.

Seriously, he seems to be a tremendous talent hidden on a bad team.

A WR slut ....I love it

Scouting report posted this morning for latimer. Calls him a 4-5th round pick who may be drafted higher because of his speed. 1st round seems like a bit of a stretch, no?

"Cody Latimer – Wide Receiver – Indiana

Size – 6025 – 215 – 4.46

Strong Points – Size, speed, top production, hands, ability to adjust to the ball

Weak Points – Coming off a broken bone in his foot, limited route tree, average blocker, has some tightness in his hips, not used inside that much

2013 Stats – 72 receptions, 1096 yards, 9 touchdowns, 135 career receptions, 2012 yards, 17 touchdowns

Summation – Cody is a third-year junior entering the draft as an underclassman. He played as a reserve his first year at Indiana and has been a starter the last two season.

He has excellent size at 6025 – 215. Though still recovering from a broken bone in his foot, he still ran 4.47 in the 40 and had a 39” vertical jump at a limited pro day a few weeks ago.

On tape, he has some athletic limitations. He does not play to that timed speed and also has some tightness in his hips that hurts his ability to get in and out of cuts really quickly. He does not show a quick burst, but he has long speed once under way. He can be effective as a deep receiver.

Indiana plays from a spread offense, and like many spread offenses, Latimer has a limited route tree. He usually lines up outside and runs hitches, comebacks, some bubble screens, and go routes. I have seen him run some inside routes, but the majority are outside the numbers.

Latimer has very good hands and a large receiving radius. He can adjust to the ball, almost always catches the ball in his hands, and can high-point it. After the catch, he tucks the ball away quickly. As a runner, he gets what is there and has strength to get extra yards, but he is not a really elusive runner. As a blocker, Latimer is willing but not consistently effective. He isn’t a really physical player.

With Latimer running and jumping as good as he did, teams are going back for another look. The Indiana scheme does limit him some. An NFL offense will be more suitable to his traits. He will need to improve his route running. Part of that will be learning to sink his hips and get in and out of cuts more quickly. There is no question that he has upside.

Latimer has talent, and while he will need time to develop, I see him as an eventual starter in the league. I have not seen anything on tape that shows me that he would be a good special teams' player while he is developing. With his size and leaping ability, he may be used right away as a red zone receiver.

I see Cody as a good fourth-to-fifth round receiver, but the speed he showed in a limited workout may get him drafted higher (third round).

Grade – B 6.5"

After the first 3 or 4 players there is a big group of players that are ranked pretty closely and could be higher on one teams boards then others. Latimer is one of those. He very well could last to the 3rd because the WR depth is incredible in this draft but you can't count on it. I think we will see a lot of surprises with th WR off the board as teams evaluate them differently and rank differently.

Strengths

Very good size. Shows a jab step to get into routes cleanly and is equipped to combat the jam. Can use his frame and physicality to create separation on slants and “post-up” throws. Nice catch radius -- extends to snag throws off his body. Soft, dependable hands. Nice strength after the catch. Good blocker -- subdues cornerbacks, shields, stalks and sustains. Improved steadily over three years as a starter.

Weaknesses

Is high-cut and shows some lower-body stiffness in his route running. Average burst off the line. Not a quick-twitch athlete -- could struggle to shake loose from more athletic corners. Lacks foot speed to separate vertically. Is straightlinish after the catch and will not make anyone miss. Marginal special-teams utility. Football was not his first love.

Draft Projection

Rounds 4-5

Bottom Line

A prep basketball standout, Latimer is a well-built, sure-handed, West Coast possession receiver whose hardwood background is evident in his leaping ability, body control and hand-eye coordination. Lacks ideal explosiveness, gear change and flexibility. Could be effective running slants and making contested catches to beat zone coverage and succeed in the red zone. Has a ceiling as a No. 3.

Big difference between saying he might not last till the third and we have to pick him in the first. Latimer in the first would clearly be a reach. That said I'm not from the full bpa school so not saying I would have the biggest problem with it. There are probably 6-7 OT I'd draft before him, plus 4-5 cb, 2-3 S, 7-8 wr at least. Etc etc.

dohhh!

as long as his foot checks out for teams at individual workouts, he could surprise as a late first-round pick."

He will need to prove that his foot has healed, but his combination of size, speed, soft hands and good route-running could make him hard to pass up for a team like the Carolina Panthers, which lost Ted Ginn, Jr., Brandon LaFell and Steve Smith, or for the New England Patriots late in the first round.

I think he goes middle 2nd hence the reason I said if we want him we'll have to get him in the 1st. If he's there for our 2nd he would be a steal at that point.

With all the attention he is getting do you think he will be there for us in the 3rd?

Well I think he could very well be a 2nd rounder in May. But, again this is a deep, deep class at wr. There's a lot of wrs that if you just go off projections, are supposed to go before Latimore. Still, this is the NFL Draft and usually some players like Latimore himself will go higher.

The thing is, it's good for us either way. If Latimore is there in the late 3rd, we take him. If not, that means someone else will be there.

Expect Latimer to also hold a workout for other teams after fully healed form a foot injury. The large target has a strong chance to be selected in the top-40.

The Panthers will have dinner with Indiana WR Cody Latimer on April 8 and put him through classroom exercises the following day, according to NFL.com's Gil Brandt.

Brandt previously reported the Panthers will host Latimer for a visit on April 24, so this is a considerable amount of interest. With that said, numerous teams go through these kinds of activities with a number of prospects each year, but many are unreported. Receivers coach Ricky Proehl and director of college scouting Don Gregory will be the contingent that visits Latimer.

    • At this rate, maybe he'll be a decent 8-9 QB on his 3rd HC by year 6. Standards are so low around here now. Tepper has done some serious damage to the fan base.
