How much did Jordan Gross's retirement have to do with Smith being cut?

Gross and Smith seemed to have a pretty close relationship.  Gross was considered a leader in the locker room.  With Gross gone, Smith would be the only "old guy" left.  He would be the unquestioned leader of the team, or at least the offense.  Maybe Gettleman didn't like that and preferred the offense just straight up be Cam Newton's show to run...but it's also not hard to justify cutting a 35 year old receiver with declining skills.

Probably a combination of things, but I was curious to get some opinions?

I doubt that had anything to do with it, Smitty being cut was due in part to 8 million cap hit next year and him turning 35.

side note

I saw a autographed Steve Smith Sr helmet for sale and it made me cry

Big assumption you're making here is Cam being Gettleman's guy. I'm not completely sure that's the case at all and I still need a lot of convincing that Cam is Gettleman's choice to play QB for the Carolina Panthers for the next 10 years or so...

Yes, let's just ignore the fact that Getts had publicly said Cam is the franchise QB
