NBA Executives Believe Gasol May Land In Charlotte

Recommended Posts

You can forget about landing any RFA's (Stephenson, Monroe, Hayward etc.). Good RFA's rarely leave their current team because their current team owns their bird rights allowing them to go over the cap to re-sign them.

With the current cap system hammering teams that go into the luxury tax, I think you'll see it a bit more then you used to under the previous system. Still won't happen a lot though.

Not according to ESPN.

Hayward, Stephenson, Monroe, Parsons, Bradley, Bledsoe, and Thomas... some of the best young talent in the NBA, all RFA's.

Only first round picks who complete their rookie deals (Hayward, Monroe, Bradley, Bledsoe) and non-first rounders with three years of service or less (Thomas, Parsons) are eligible to be restricted.

Stephenson is a second rounder in his fourth season so he's unrestricted (ESPN is the only place I've seen listing him as restricted).

This is why the Rockets have to decide whether to extend Parsons this off-season, while he'd be restricted, or exercise their team option to keep him for cheap for a fourth season, despite knowing he'll be unrestricted after a fourth year.

Interesting, didn't know that second rounders weren't eligible. Thanks for the info.

They are eligible if they have three years of experience or less, which is why most second rounders get three-year deals (See: Jeff Taylor), but with 4+ years they can no longer be restricted.

So Thomas - Mr. Irrelevant a few years back - is still restricted since he only has three years of service. Same with Parsons unless they exercise the fourth year option.
