Fluff piece on the LSU duo by Max Henson of panthers.com. Hmmm. That's an idea

If Landry could be somewhat like Boldin then this scenario would be pretty great. I have my reservations though. Boldin IMO is just so undervalued because he doesn't possess elite speed. Yet the guy continues to ball out and make plays over defenders. If Landry can be Boldin-esque I have no issues with his 40 time.

I'd be hoping it can be a Fitzgerald/Boldin type duo

Watch the highlight films- kid is a natural playmaker. I'd put him right there with Lee. I didn't want him based on measurables, but then I watched the highlight reels and changed my mind.

While you should never be scouting a guy or forming your opinion on him over highlight reels, I agree that when you watch Landry's you walk away wowed. The kid has a collection of some of the most acrobatic crazy catches I've seen in a long time. Doesn't mean he's going to pull them off all the time in the league but if he pulls a couple crazy catches out of his ass it gains a QB's trust. If I had to just throw it up and hope someone comes down with it, I'm looking Jarvis' way 9 times out of 10. After watching as many cut-ups as I can on the kid, he simply catches anything that gets close to his hands. I don't care that he wasn't blazing fast at the combine because he has one of if not the most crisp route running abilities and is crafty as hell in losing defenders. You will be watching him go against these DB's playing a zone scheme and he will find the hole in their coverage before you realize where it is. He said it himself, he loves to do the dirty work and I can't get enough of that attitude for our team. A lot of teams are going to regret passing on him imo.

I saw the combine 40 and he got a bad start both times--I imagine he is somewhere in the 4.55-4.6 range. They run on painted turf there. Of course when you hear a WR is pushing 4.8 it scares you because we have a ton riding on our rookie WRs-more than most teams.

which 40 did you see? He pulled a hammy at combine.

I did not see the pull--I was watching the You tube version of a run---he got off to a slow start twice--but I can't remember if the second slow start was just me watching the same run a month later.

I think it came in at an unofficial 4.66 or something.  He looked slow out of the blocks--a bit awkward--and then (it could be the film and not Landry) there seemed to be a weird hitch just before the 30--I dunno.

I am happy that the 40 time could possibly be a fluke.

If I remember correctly the raider have drafted speedy guys every year almost. Don't see tem in the playoffs.

I want football players who know the game and are smart.

The rest takes care of itself.

Size and speed are NOT everything.

I want a sure handed guy.  TO me, that is the most important thing.  I would rather they catch the damn ball in traffic than drop it when they are wide open.  I am funny that way though.

Seriously, when I read, "Inconsistent hands" I think, "Then he is inconsistent at his job."  The only thing he has to do is get open and catch the ball.

So if you ask me, I want a guy like Lee, Abbrederis, Latimer (I think he is sure handed--he sure knows how to go after the ball).

Considering we, most of us, don't have access to coaches film the highlight tapes are all we have to go by.

Yeah but we can at least go on a site like draftbreakdown or find YouTube videos (they are out there) of every play they are involved in aka cut ups so you aren't just watching the best they have to offer. Sure it's not the all 22 footage the scouts look at so they can see EVERYTHING. Gotta take the bad with the good though, in Landry's case there just isn't much bad.

Track speed and football speed are two different things. He is not coming out of the blocks when he is a wr. Some guys are better at TRACK then others but not at FOOTBALL.. IMO

40 time is horrifically overrated. Ur running a STRAIGHT 40 yards, how often do u get that opportunity in football games? The only thing it can guarantee is not getting caught from behind after youve gotten behind everyone, which is fairly uncommon in the nfl.

Also these combine workouts dont have pads or helmets. An extra 5-10 lbs effects speed and agility for every player at different amounts.

Uhhh, you do realize the 40 is overrated right? Fitzgerald ran a 4.6 and Boldin ran a 4.7.

I don't care if we get a receiver that runs a 4.8 so long as he has great hands, an above average football IQ, can get off the LOS and attack the middle of the field.

Those WRs you mentioned have size--Landry is 5'11"--a speed WR needs uhhhh, what is the word I am looking for...

A 4.8 is a red flag. He may have picked a bad day to have a bad day. He can catch, have a good IQ, etc. , but if he ain't open,he ain't gettin' the ball.  His speed out of the break, body positioning, hands, etc are bigger factors, but aren't people assuming he has those characteristics because he has overcome what might be a speed issue?  Speed is part of the puzzle, and it is measured in the 40.  That is why scouts and coaches sit at the 40 in Indy every February pointing time pieces at nothing.

The biggest mistake anyone in talent evaluation can make is comparing a player to another player and projecting success or failure on that other player's accomplishments or failures.  I am not ready to assume that Landry has an above average football IQ or that he can get off the LOS--he has never had to either on the NFL level. So if the one measurable is bad, there is reason for concern.

A final thought--beware of a WR who was successful in college as the #2.  (Bryant, Clemson is another one).  They did not get the focus of the defense backs.
