First Week of Training Camp Wrap-Ups

Hey, we've been nice with the new scouting department.. it is possible that we find those gems like this guy. Just thinking out loud, don't take it to heart, he could be great during camp and horrible in the game.

But we've had quite a few backup players start elsewhere, which is a great sign...

I don't think very highly of Landon Johnson, so I loved seeing Robinson make it to the second level.

So it's a run play up the middle and Robinson breaks past the dl, Johnson breaks down, gets low and moves towards Duke. Fractions of a second later they collide and while Johnson had the speed, position and leverage he got swallowed by Duke, Robinson didn't even break a sweat or stride and Johnson was left flat oN his ass, it was beautiful. Talk about a mismatch.

Nice visual. I love this O-Line and Robinson is only a rookie and 2nd string.

I went to camp this morning and this is what I saw. They started off with one on one drills. I liked the fact that the defensive backfield worked on fundamentals like how to control a receiver off the line. They worked on hand and foot placement, shadowing the receiver, steering him to one side or the other. Don't remember much emphasis on that in the past. When Dbs were practicing against other DBs posing as receivers I saw cover 3 drills and cover 2 drills. DBs were line up 4 or 5 yards off the ball and sometimes shadowed, sometimes bumped and sometimes backed off, nothing really unusual other than they practiced several zone elements.

Then they did one on one drills between the receivers and Dbs and it was interesting. Captain has good moves, is pretty fast backpedaling and bumps well off the line. He also bumps all the way down the field and has trouble finding the ball and looking back for it instead of mugging the receiver. I am sure he is just trying to be aggressive but I fear he might get a few interference calls with his zeal to cover. He reminds me alot of Ricky Manning Jr.

Harris got so turned around and faked out by Monk one time I wonder how effective he is going to be in the secondary. His zone coverage seems adequate but he really isn't very good at all in man or tight coverage. ( nothing new there). Wilson and Wesley looked decent although I gave the nod to Wilson. Marshall and Gamble looked pretty good also.

Among the receivers carter caught everything again, Monk was spotty, made a few decent catches and dropped a few easy ones. he is big though. Moose was quite good and Smith didn't actually get many balls. Robinson also looked good on one short ball which he promptly did a spin move and he was gone. The best news seems his knee is completely healed and he looked pretty fast and able to cut well in both directions. Jarrett looked pretty good as well. He made a great over the shoulder catch as he was going out of bounds and held onto the ball. Cheary, McMahan, Moore, and Beavers don't look in the mix to make the team based on this practice.

On the offensive defensive matchups they rotated in all the guys and it wasn't much different than expected except with Beason not practicing, the defense was shuffled around quite a bit. As I mentioned in a TE thread on the main forum, the offense used a lot of multiple tight end plays using 2 TES and three TEs in passing plays not short yardage or jumbo packages. Sometimes they ran out of it, sometimes they passed, someetimes they lined up both TEs to one side with King on the line and Rosario or Barnidge in the slot, othe time they started that way and the slot guy would go in motion to the other side. Maybe it was the heat and it was a mirage but it seemed we had one formation where we had the tight end on the line, a wide receiver in the slot, Williams lined out wide, and 2 receivers on the other side. I swear I counted 5 eligible receivers. I know it must have been the heat.

The defense doesn't seem to be as far along as the offense at this point but they were physical and I noticed they tried to strip the ball on every play. Brought a tear of joy to my eye. Since they weren't tackling for real it was hard to tell if the running bacls getting free would have happened in a real game. But even Hoover caught one out of the backfield and hauled down the field. Looked like Hayden was in for Kemo.

All I can say is that Jake better not get hurt. Mccown and Moore did not look good at all. They held the balll too long, overthrew guys by 10 or 15 yards and both got intercepted. It was ugly. Cantwell didn't get that many reps but frankly he looked marginally better than those 2 if you can actually use the word better with a big qualifier.

Who impressed and surprised me? Lloyd. He took the reps kicking field goals and was booting the ball from the 30 and 35 yard markers (40 and 45 yards out). There was a camera platform cranked up over the top of the field goal uprights about 10 yards behind the endzone. On multiple occasions he landed the ball in the platfoem and actually hit every one down the middle. Frankly it looked like they would have been good from 60 yards. I am not kidding.

That was about it. Think I might go to fan fest tomorrow and see them scrimmage.
