What does the Ramsdell hiring say about Shula's future?

This guy has a:

star-studded resume

however I note that he never really made it past QB coach (until today) and has been out of work for a couple of years. I get that Rivera might see him as a like minded guy but his resume doesn't scream the next OC for the Panthers.

Could be wrong

There's not?

I mean, if the above is 100% reality in his mind, it would've been easy to just let Shula go and hire Ramsdell as OC.   Before Smith got hurt, I feel like the offense was more or less exactly what Rivera wanted.

So other reasons to bring on Ramsdell -

*he can actively help out

*our QBs coach and WRs coaches are bright and probably going places, but both have minimal coaching experience, so he can mentor and fill in the gaps where they aren't as strong

*Shula himself can always use some help

None of that means "Rivera wants to fire Shula."  Yes, Ramsdell can most likely succeed Shula and, if it's required, he probably would.  That's another reason he's valuable, but it's not like they're going to keep a guy like that behind glass either.

I think you are 100% correct. I am sure the FO realized Shula has been playing with 1/2 a deck of talent and will again this year but, they probably thought he should have done better given what he had.(cover your ass 101)

In those situations good management. gives you the benefit of the doubt and gives you additional tools to.improve. Ramsdell may be that tool, however, they put you on a short leash which is where I see Shula.

.We will really not know the talent  that will be available on offense until this summer but even if we get good picks at LT and WR our offense will not improve given the losses versus the learning curves of rookies I believe.

I can appreciate the logic of the  " other reasons to hire Ramsdell "

But I can not fathom Rivera happy being  26 th in total yards or 18 th in total points last year.  Not in our division.  Or for that matter in any division  - we had too many games last year, even with our stingy ass d , that came down to a matter of good fortune being on our side in the final few minutes.  And I would bet money Gettleman wasnt happy with it or having his shiney new franchise qb needing to carry the offense with his legs so many times.

I'm telling you guys think of Bruce Dehaven from last year, he could've easily been our ST coach if they wanted him to be. But as an assistant, he brought really valuable experience for the rookie ST coach we had and probably was a big reason we had one our best ST units in years. I think the team might have been thinking the same thing with Ramsdell, valuable experience and coaching to assist the offense and Cam. But really this is all speculation, who knows.

I get where you're coming from.  Certainly, all agree that improvement needs to happen.  But when Rivera talks of replacing "ten catches" at WR, I think he wants those opportunities to be better, as opposed to having more opportunities (i.e., the quality might improve but I don't think things will become much more open or exotic).

Looking at the 9ers and Seahawks, and it's a similar situation.  They just have more talent at WR.  The upside, it's possible; the downside, and I think his "ten catches" statement speaks to it, they're not going to dump tons of resources into something that might not be used as much.

The 49ers and Hawks had a pretty decent rushing game as well.

Clearly our passing game was weak partly because of receivers but my observation is that it could have been better with better play selection, passing accuracy and blocking by our OL.

From mid-season I believe all the way to the playoffs the biggest issue didn't get fixed, and we lost because of it. I'm calling it now, the issue will remain the same this season

I am dense ....what was the biggest issue? I saw several.

I think some of you are too harsh on shula. If you watch the film he had some good schemes to start with its just that he never expanded the playbook. I think adding someone to help this is great, Shula is def a humble guy and seems open to working with others.

lol but really

what i saw was Cam bringing it all together. maybe i'm just fuging crazy though right?

and maybe some people don't realize that this is a team sport. Cam's crazy rookie year? also featured a poo ton of turnovers. 2nd year? a poo load of turnovers.

Cam was elite last year and i don't care about the numbers. i watched the games. the dude made it happen. and he believed in Shula. why would he do that?

Shula got Cam to play within the team. Within the talent of the team. And 12-4 is what happened. I like the Ramsdell hiring because complacency is never a good thing. 2 minds are better than 1.
