Thomas DeCoud Visiting Monday

Because guys who had terrible years don't usually make the pro bowl. No matter how much of a popularity contest it is. Bad players usually don't make the trip to Hawaii.

Collectively your right. There are numerous great players out there who are obviously deserving and make it. But every year there are players who don't. DeCoud, to me, is one of them. If you have evidence otherwise then Id be happy to see it. But simply stating he made the Pro Bowl is not a strong argument.

It is when you say he had a terrible year in 2012 but he made a pro bowl 2012. That fact totally goes against your statement because again while the pro bowl is a popularity contest they still don't invite players who are having terrible years.

Absolutely. My post was just arguing he didn't play well in 2012.

His peers obviously felt otherwise.

It'll be what, the 4th week of free agency, lets not kid ourselves into thinking he's gonna be all that and a bag of chips. But behind our front 7, if Mitchell can earn himself a nice contract off 4 picks, id be happy with 6 picks from him.

Knowledge of the division helps too.

I think Pro Bowl voting from players is better and more legitimate then fans but it still shouldn't carry much weight for several reasons. But that's another argument. DeCoud will no question be better because of our D,   I was just making the argument it wasn't quite comparable to Mitchell. We'll see.

I've later said I wouldn't argue with him being "below average". Players like that do make it in. And how can we tell when players who make it to the Pro Bowl are not coming off a good year? Stats like I've supplied

Somebody refresh my memory. We can just cut Godfrey once he is healthy? What is the cap hit?

I hoped someone would help you here, so I waited. I am not 100% sure and don't have details, but I refuse to leave a fellow Catamount hanging.

I think we clear about $4 million (June 1 cut) and are waiting for him to get medical clearance. even if he were not injured, it makes no sense for them to cut him now anyway.

I think DeCoud will be a Panther by Wednesday.

It's been mentioned but I'll expand on it a bit, a regular cut (or trade) would only save 2.1m this year, but he'd be completely off the books after that. So the cap savings each year would be:

2014: 2.1m

2015: 7.1m

2016: 6.4m

Or we could go the Post-June 1 route, which saves more this year but saves less next season.

2014: 5.1m

2015: 4.1m

2016: 6.4m

My first thought was that we should just cut him outright. However, cutting him June 2 gives us the option to use more space in the interim, but if for whatever reason we don't use it all it just rolls over to 2015 anyway.

So a post-June cut seems like the way to go, but keep in mind that we don't actually reap the benefits until June. For instance, Smitty still has a cap number of 6m, as if he were still on the roster. But once June rolls around the hit reduces to 5m.

Please enlighten me.

What other players having a below avg. year made the pro bowl?

And please don't show me anything PFF does I care less about them and their site.

Pro Bowlers tend to favor guys on winning teams, ATL were that. They had a highly rated D that year but still not a lot of pass rush outside Abraham. He'll likely have the chance to look better than he ever has sitting back in zone and reading the D.

I think only 1 third is fan votes. another third players and the last third coaches. So the general feeling of the populous was that he had a good year. Yeah, DB's get acknowledged for picks and DE's for sacks.

I think he has shown more talent than Mitchell had prior to getting here. I thought Mitchell would just be a role player used for safety blitzes and as a gunner but he became so much more. We'll see.

He is more of a player than mitchell was before he got here. We've got a great front 7 to incubate our secondary, and a bunch of fantastic defensive coaches
