Brian Strickland of panthers.com gives ideas in computerized mock

Not sure we need two draft two tackles and a guard. I appreciate the O-Line needs work, but if we work off the following base:

LT: ? / Chandler or McDonald / Bond

LG: Silatolu / Jasper / Manley

C: Kalil / Folkerts

RG: Scott / Kugbila / Chandler

RT: Bell / Williams / Chandler or McDonald (?)

Now the LT is a big hole to fill. Personally I'd rather see us grab a guy in the draft and/or give Chandler a chance at LT over moving Bell. So that's one tackle needed. I don't think we need a second because with Bell, or if they decide to go with two new starting tackles then Williams or Chandler, then the team should be fine at RT.

Guard could do with another talented guy. Silatolu is coming back off an injury, but if he can get healthy and back to form he'll slot in nicely at LG. And at RG Scott can do a job, or if he's not going to tackle, then Chandler can play RG pretty well. I'd probably still take a guy to push Silatolu though.

So the main thing I'm not sure on in this mock is two tackles and a guard. I think one tackle and one guard will suffice, and use the other pick on a position of need.

Our OL is bad, but having two career #3 WRs (at best) as your starters, in my mind, necessitates that the first pick (or two) be a WR.

I could be very wrong, but IMO, you're a lot more likely to find a solid OL starter deep in the draft than a WR that would make a significant impact as a rookie.

That's about as far from the truth as possible.  You're much more likely to find a quality WR later in the draft than a quality OT.

The idea that you can just draft an immediate impact WR in the first is flawed anyway, because the position is notoriously tough to get immediate production from.

It is SOOO much fun to be armchair GM especially during this time of year, but I have nothing to go by in reality, except some talking heads on sports shows telling me what to think along with any game film I can get to try to judge for myself along with the combine.

The fact is, we might get a draft like this and raise holy cain because we think the Panthers screwed up.  But what we base our opinions on is woefully short what Gman will base his opinion on.

Just keep that in mind when you feel so indignant at some of these mocks.  At 28, I know the anticipation here will be swingin wildly with each pick that goes off the board.  The calls during that Thursday night for Gman to "move up, do something" will be fun to watch.  In the end, Gman has looked like a pro at his position.  I will still call out guys I want and guys I don't want, but it will not have any merit compared with the weight our FO puts on whomever they pick.

Enjoy the ride.  At least we won't be giving up next years picks for guys who are cut before or at the end of their rookie contract.

I did research last year and the average draft position of all NFL teams #1 WR in the 2013 was right at the bottom of the 2nd/top of the 3rd round.

so what may or may not be available later in the draft would make you pick differently in the first two rounds?

I wouldn't like that at all.
