Wharton leaning towards retirement

The following exchange does not create any kind of story to report on. Nobody would have a clue that interest is expressed unless it generates a visit. The only way this gets noticed is if Wharton or his agent say something about it....if he is retiring then they have no reason to.

"Hey Wharton's Agent, we are thinking about your client"

"He's considering retiring"

"Oh, ok then"

Regardless I was just correcting you when you said he wasn't what he used to be. He had the best season of his career. You can read just about any list of FA guards and they will list him between 1 and 5.

While I'd agree he had a good season last year, I'd say "best season of his career" is a bit much.  "Best season since leaving the Panthers" would be more accurate.

But as to the first part: You really think someone's agent - i.e. the guy whose job it is to get him a good contact, not to mention the guy who only gets paid when they get a contract - would just deflect interest from his client like that?

Seriously?

I wish people will stop using money as an excuse because that's all it is. If you want to sign a player you can. If money is going to continue being excuse then you can say signing Greg Hardy was irresponsible because he's currently occupying over half the money we had going into free agency.

This.

If an organization really wants to sign a player, they can get it done. Look at the Broncos, Patriots, and other teams year in and year out. We've just never been the team to go after that big player in free agency. We could've signed D Jax if we really wanted to, which we should've.

Yes we could probably have made a deal with cap figures in the $4-10-10M including a $9M signing bonus and the second year fully guaranteed.

Problem:

1. New contact that goes over the cap is automatically voided by the league. So first we would have to cut or reconstruct.

2. We need to pay cam next year, do you really want $10M less to deal with? Regardless if Jackson is still on the team.

3. Even this is less total money and less upfront money than he got from Washington.

This is a one player away from a deep play off run kind of deal. With the state of our oline after gross retired we are not.
