release Godfrey now!

Godfrey does not help us until June 1, I think.  Someone else said he needs to be medically cleared too.  No rush--his savings will probably sign the rookies.

But yeah, I get it.  A bad S who is coming off an Achilles.

I guess he is just going to sit here until June or we find his replacement.

From my understanding, you don't have to actually wait until June 1st to cut him - you simply need to designate him a June 1st cut. The part about him being medically cleared is correct though. If we do want to cut him, that's the only thing stopping us.

OTA's start April 21st I believe. We will get a good look at Godfrey then. He will either be cut or restructure his deal.

That is the way I understand it too.  However, even if you cut him now, the money does not help the cap until June.  So, since we are waiting for medical clearance and have no one behind him at S, might as well wait.

That's enough $ for our rookies. +1 about it.

that may be enough to sign our 1st rounder plus some change.

at some point you people are going to have to come to the realization that the cap doesnt work the way you think it does.

the Panthers will shift and move money around without the slightest bit of difficulty as any team does. they are capable of signing anyone they want because of this.

Godfrey was roasted alive in coverage when he was 100% healthy, god only knows how bad he is now that he destroyed his Achilles. If it's anything like the drop off Beason experienced then I'd say his career is over. If Godfrey isn't cut then I'll be stunned, but stranger things have happened.

This is my thinking.  We're going to see what falls to us in the draft and then make moves accordingly after.  We're just playing it safe with Godfrey because he's either taking a straight up pay cut to the max or getting released.

According to overthecap.com (article here) we only need $1,669,283 in new cap space for the draft. The 7 contracts will cost about 4.6M but we'll gain back the bottom 7 contracts in the top-51 equation; thus only costing 1.6M in new money. 3.98M is plenty.

Also, if we sign FA's, we'll gain $ that leaves the top-51 contract equation. Bottom 51st right now is a 495k contract. If you sign an FA for 1M, you gain 495k -- meaning the new player only costs 505k in new cap space.
