To B(PA) or not to B(PA)

BPA is also greatly affected by game planning philosophy. Front Seven on defense hold much more weight than the Secondary and in the secondary Safeties hold more weight.

Gotta have the tie-breaker!

Lets say its the 3rd rd and of the remaining players on our big board we have:

1)a deep threat WR(big time potential playmaker)

2)a sure handed, blocking TE

They both grade the same. TE gets the pick

If Pryor and Fuller are sitting there at 28, they I'm quite sure Pryor gets the nod. If Yankey or Lewan is there then either one of those get the nod over Pryor or Fuller

BPA is best player avalaible in each team's board when the pick comes. I have no idea why people keep doubting the philosophy bringing up other prospects names when we have no idea how the board is stacked.

There are more than 224 picks each year, NFL draft boards are filled with 100-150 names (teams like the Patriots are rumored to have even a smaller number). There's just no way every popular player with a 1st round grade given by draftniks and media is in every team's draft board. For what we know Mathieu very well could be off the board for Carolina considering his off-the-field stuff.

Green Bay is rumored to throw every defense back under 5-11 off their board. And each FO in the NFL have these type of "rules" when grading players, in one way or another.

That teams' General Managers like to lie and brag about their BPA philosophy when they could be pushing a prospect based on need? Sure

That we as fans have no idea if our team has truly drafted the best player avalaible (unless you're the Cowboys) and bringing up more known players to dispute the fact that a pick "is not BPA" is a very stupid point? Also true.

That's a big part of the point.

Though to be fair, i don't think Gettleman is actually lying about his offseason philosophy.  I think it's more a case of the cap situation not really allowing him to be true to it.  At least for the moment.

Once the bad contracts are out, then I think we'll see full application.

Great post. Also its a philosophy not a law. They will bend it to fit the current situation.

BPA is a misnomer. if a QB or MLB are the best players on the board at 28 we won't draft either if them. BPA is relative to need.

Valid.

But if we can get to a point where there aren't any glaring needs, then you're free as a bird.

Didn't gettleman say that short was the highest player on their board at the time? I always took it as a BPA pick. The fans board and their board isnt exactly a mirror image.

To be fair, every GM will say that about every player they take.

And I'll grant he may well have been. I'm just not dead sold on the idea.

The true BPA at 28 this year might be a runningback.  I'd be surprised if we take one there though.

If it weren't for Mathieu's off field issues we would've 100% definitely taken him there. We absolutely didn't need a LB in Alonso nor a RB in Lacy... Short could definitely have been the BPA regardless of position on G-man's board, aside from Mathieu w/ his questionability. Looking at it now, I wish we would've taken Mathieu there, but I'm ecstatic about KK and Star. Star was obviously BPA.

I think that we think BPA means the best football player without regarding fit (skill set --- system) and need....Last year, I am guessing that we did a bit of homework on Star because we needed a DT and he was a good player.  I think that need led to doing our homework on Short as well. So, we valued him, knew him well, etc. when his name was there in the second round.  So we take the familiar name that is also a need.

So, If I am a GM, my board is going to be based on many factors, one of them has to be need.  For example, do we draft Bridgewater if Taylor Lewan is avalable?

i believe you almost need to add position value. the best long snapper doesnt compare to the best DE. dave knows DL is second in value after QB. different teams, different values, rookie contracts, rule changes, evolution, etc etc. example: the rule changes have hurt the values on ST. a kickoff returner has less value now than he did a few years ago, but in return having a kicker like gano causes that change too. if youre a team and have andy reid calling plays, you value pass protection over run blocking. ive never put a high value on OG, but id change that if drew breeus or wilson was QBing(short QB needs stud OGs).

plus you have to look at what going on your division. winning there is important and it changes value to accomplish that too. have a young mike vick? well draft a hybrid that can spy him ala thomas davis. the other teams have a passing attack, draft pass rushing DL and run blocking offensive types. have problem/s draft answers.

theres millions & millions of factors in making a BPA list.

I actually did a bit on true BPA - on the assumption the team's board was the various draft lists I was looking at, what would we be picking at 28, 60, etc based on who was the best player "left"?

in some cases you get a better player, gaining a round of value over the first three rounds.  In some cases you draft a QB and two DTs.
