Funny you say that. I remember probably 12 years ago I was in county jail working in the reception area. This is where people from the courts and city lockups and highway patrol arrests all come to be screened before they go into general population. They screen for TB, find out your race and gang affiliations, etc.

So I remember mopping the floor and seeing a whiteboard next to a cell and it has a giant D/O written on it. This means dropout which basically means you quit the gang you were in, which needless to say is all bad for you. At that point in my life I was conditioned to look at dropouts as garbage, and so I went to look into the cell and it was a guy I used to hang out daily years before named Manuel.

I say Manny wtf you are a dropout?! He tells me that he'd been in San Quentin the past 4 years and he had a week to go until he went home and the powers that be told him to murder his cell mate. Obviously this would mean life in prison for him and he wouldn't do it so he dropped out and was then a target.

That poo really hit home for me and made me think fug that poo I'm never gonna be in anybody's pocket like that to let them control my life. Had I not seen him who knows where I'd be today, because that was something powerful that really woke me up. Luckily I wasn't actually in a gang, just known as a loved one and family member, so me going in another direction was never a threat to my life or anything like that, but yeah, it's EASY to get caught in the trap man.

I'll get a letter once in a blue moon but other than that I don't even associate with any of those guys anymore, especially after my wife's lil bro was killed. I'm way cool on that, I'll go to work, get my check, and take my family out to a halfway decent meal from time to time and call it a life.

 

Glad that you made those good choices.  Your kids definitely have a role model to look up to.  You can really speak to them about the importance of decisions that you make in your life.

 

Any idea what ever happened to your friend?  Hopefully he was able to walk away with his life.

Having friends that our in gangs is not the same as being actively involved with the gang himself. That's a huge difference between him and Hernandez so anyone making that comparison is lazy and ignorant.

Multiple players speak out about how football saved their lives because they had friends who've died to hang violence and football kept them from that. Someone please try to explain the different between that and this

I've grown up in the Bay Area, and I have so many friends in prison with gang affiliations it's sickening. I have several friends in San Quentin for various felonies, several close friends in Tehachapi, Corcoran, Deuel Tracy, and Susanville. My little brother is in San Quentin right now and is a validated gang member. My wife's younger brother was stabbed to death because he was a dropout, left to die on a sidewalk.

I hung out with these guys my entire childhood and would have died for any one of them at some point, but they've made their choices and I've made mine and now I'm happy doing the 9-5 wife and kids and picket fence thing. This might have little to do with Desean Jackson I'm just saying having ties to gang members doesn't necessarily make you a piece of sh!t.

It's amazing what a couple hills can do dividing tri valley and the tri thuggery (Oak-SLZ-Hayward). Best thing my parents did was move me away from that ish and to Dublin when I was in High School.

Idk, I think part of this is a PR-job on behalf of the Eagles to drive his value down after his release.  No reports of concerns with the gang affiliations prior to his release...  There was an article done on his gang ties, but it was through Larry Brown Sports, IIRC, and that was awhile back.

 

They know he is still talented and want to scare teams off of him.  Seems like there were some personal issues between him and the front office as well... 

 

Who knows?  But, as long as he hasn't Aaron Hernandez'ed anyone, I want us to get him.

The worst part about all of this is the social media onslaught and the media field day. ESPN and other media outlets make their money by sensationalism. They're paid to entertain us. So of course taking about gang ties will "sell" more than just talking about what team he went to. Imagine this happened 10 years ago. We wouldn't even hear much about it. The gang tak would be behind closed doors. If the media got wind of it we'd hear about it and be concerned of course, but then DJ and his statement would squash it. But now, with social media, everyone is a reporter, everyone takes it so damn serious. We could go from DJ having taken photos with known gang members to him still being in a gang in 5 minutes time. Now everyone is talking about it and it may very well be a non-issue (let's hope it is). But social media has now made this almost realer than it needs to be.

Social media allows any and everyone to have an opinion and their opinion be heard. Evidently teams don't think much of it cause in 30 minutes it's reported 4 teams have contacted his agent. I think the murder part is the most important part, cause athletes and gang affiliations has been and will continue be a subject that it's not really much of a story anymore
